With MakeMKV 1.18.2, I Notice Libredrive Mode Returned to My Beloved Pioneer BDR-212UBK US Model
When and how did THIS miracle happen? 1.05 is still the latest firmware. If Pioneer releases new firmware, will libredrive mode still work? Also, my 212 is four and a half years old. So I don't know if I'll have to replace it in less than a year. If I replace it with a 213 on the latest firmware, will libredrive mode still work?

a 213 is not UHD but is libredrive but stay with the UBK because it does UHD
and 213 cant be crossflashed with 12/22 fw

When you say the 213 won't do UHD Blu-rays, do you only mean it won't play them? Being that it can now do libredrive mode, will it still be able to rip 4K Blu-rays?

No it won't see them at allChris Kelly wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 5:02 pmWhen you say the 213 won't do UHD Blu-rays, do you only mean it won't play them? Being that it can now do libredrive mode, will it still be able to rip 4K Blu-rays?
Its not a official UHD Blu-ray drive
Libre drive does not mean UHD support
If the fw is pre 12/22 it can be crossflashed to do UHD

So basicly, if my BDR-212UBK dies, are any of the models which end in 13 libredrive AND UHD compatible? Or would I be shit out of luck if I buy one of the newer models as far as UHD Blu-ray is concerned?

It appears Pioneer is no longer manufacturing optical drives anymore. It looks like LG and Asus drives will still be in production at least for now.

Pioneer and LG are no longer making optical drives. ASUS don't make optical drives, they were sourcing OEM from LG and Pioneer, so there's really nobody manufactuinrg drives.Chris Kelly wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 6:04 pmIt appears Pioneer is no longer manufacturing optical drives anymore. I did not realize that also LG has stopped to manufacture new drives. So basically it's existing stocks and then no more new drives at all.
LG BH16NS55 (crossflashed w/ WH16NS60 1.02MK) in external enclosure
LG BU40N (1.03MK) in external enclosure
Verbatim #43888 (Pioneer BDR-UD04 FW1.14)
Pioneer BDR-208D (crossflashed w/ BDR-S11JX/BDR-211)
LG BU40N (1.03MK) in external enclosure
Verbatim #43888 (Pioneer BDR-UD04 FW1.14)
Pioneer BDR-208D (crossflashed w/ BDR-S11JX/BDR-211)

Bummer! So are you saying we are shit out of luck once our drives die? Maybe now would be a good time to see if I can find a good closeout deal on a Pioneer BDR-S13UBK or BDR-S13UX.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 10:06 pmPioneer and LG are no longer making optical drives. I noticed they were all gone from major retailers when I checked. If LG and ASUS can no longer be purchased from major retailers, I guess loading discs on to PCs will be coming to an end once the drives we own die, unless someone figures out a way to get regular Blu-ray players to act as PC drives.Billycar11 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 23, 2026 8:13 pmThe close out deals on these were in 2024Chris Kelly wrote: ↑Fri Jan 23, 2026 3:36 pmBummer! I know I'm going off topic now, but the conversation went in that direction. Amazon still has an external USB ASUS shipped and sold by Amazon. I'm not sure if the external oASUS drives can be flashed to support UHD though.Billycar11 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 25, 2026 6:01 amsomeone will have to start making them the demand is here not sure what happened that they both pulled out of the marketChris Kelly wrote: ↑Sun Jan 25, 2026 5:54 am
