Doctor Who Season 13 US Release - Newer version of AACS protection
Doctor Who Season 13 US Release - Newer version of AACS protection
US version of the 8 disc boxed set of Doctor Who Season 13 (Tom Baker season 2) came out today. MakeMKV failed to rip disc 1 on first try - newer version AACs error, although it say the disc is 82. I installed keydb, and it worked. However, discs 2-8 do not work. I used keydb helper to search for one of the other discs, and it found it in the database. I can send all the dump files to MakeMKV, but I have seen the posts indicating that I should avoid reporting disc IDs for keydb update that are already in there, so I'm not sure how to proceed. Any thoughts?
Re: Doctor Who Season 13 US Release - Newer version of AACS protection
Regular blu-rays that use the latest version of encryption, AACS v82, have to be handled similar to 4K UHDs and slightly differently than regular blu-rays with older versions of encryption.
MakeMKV supports two different disc decryption mechanisms. The built-in mechanism is called hashed keys and it works with all dumps from MakeMKV regardless of the brand of drive. When there is not a key for you disc and MakeMKV produces a dump, email that dump to svq@makemkv.com. Eventually a hashed key will be produced and MakeMKV will automatically download it as needed.
The other source for decryption keys is the public keyDB. The first post in the Public KeyDB Disc Submissions thread includes a template and instructions on how to submit dumps for inclusion in the keyDB. It also has links to where the keyDB can be downloaded, utilities to help keep it updated, and where to put the file so MakeMKV can use it.
These two ways to decrypt discs can be used together. If you can submit a dump to the keyDB you can also email it to svq@makemkv.com. Accidental duplicates emailed to MakeMKV aren't a big deal but duplicates submitted to the keyDB should be avoided if possible.

Hey dcoke22, one update for your overview: all Pioneer drives are now fully supported for the purposes of the public keydb. There is no longer any distinction between disc dump files generated with LG/Asus drives or Pioneer drives. This applies for all AACS versions.dcoke22 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 21, 2026 2:24 pmFor 4K UHDs, dumps from Pioneer drives can not generally be used for keyDB submissions. For regular blu-rays, dumps from Pioneer drives can be used for keyDB submissions. MakeMKV can use the keys provided by the public keyDB to decrypt discs with any brand of optical drive.
Public KeyDB Disc Submissions
- Please use file hosts, not forum attachments
- If your disc dump is under 3MB, you need to manually include the MKB_RO.inf file from the AACS folder

Great news! When did that happen? Any insights what made that possible?keydb_helper wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 1:31 amHey dcoke22, one update for your overview: all Pioneer drives are now fully supported for the purposes of the public keydb. January 6 or 7
Plenty of down time over the holidays...
There was no change to LibreDrive or anything else on the MakeMKV side of things. My sincere hope now is that there are no further revisions to the obfuscation.

Honestly, MakeMKV should start decrypting at least standard blu-rays on all AACS versions. It is a rather ridiculous situation at the moment when people keep coming to these threads here asking for help over and over again. How many more topics will have to be created till this gets changed? At least you should make a public how-to that describes how to unlock standard blu-rays by using keydb_helper. And stick it at the top of this forum.

Excellent job! Glad you could manage the obfuscation. Now the bandwith should be much wider for new discs.keydb_helper wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 1:58 pmJanuary 6 or 7
