WANTED: LG BU40N External USB C 3.0 Enclosure

Post by Wildwest »

I live in the USA and I need an external USB C 3.0 enclosure for my LG BU40N drive. This is a slimline notebook drive and will not fit a 5 1/4 case. I bought a new computer and need to remove the drive before I sell it.

If anyone has one of these for sale or can direct me to where I can get one in the USA I would greatly appreciate it.

Yep, I had put some Pioneer BDR-UD03's in these mid last year when the Vantec's were no longer available. Works for flashing too.

USB 2.0 is still plenty fast for an optical drive, however, when I installed drives for flashing and testing, I used my USB-C cable.

marty did you need a y cable, or does usb c deliver enough power alone

I used a USB-C cable connected to a 10Gbps USB-C port of my 24w AC powered hub. USB-C should easily deliver enough power.

Thanks for the referral but I was specifically asking about a USBC 3.0 direct connection. The throughput is much faster than USB a 2.0 and an USB C adapter does not change that. It has to be in the USB chip installed on the enclosure.

The extra bandwidth from a USB 3 connection won't matter for an optical drive. Data isn't read fast enough for it to matter.

From a broader perspective, you probably can't afford to be picky. Generally speaking, worldwide production of optical drives has stopped. Optical drive accessories are probably not long for this world either.

Guys, I appreciate y'all chiming in here about this. I will address my preference to USB C 3.0 to USB A 2.0. As most of you probably know, cell phones have had USB C connectors for quite a while. The main reason is that it can deliver more power for charging and more flexibility for connecting other devices to it. There are numerous advantages of USB C over USB A that I won't go into here. My particular reason for this is the throughput speed of the data. The transfer rate of USB 3.0 is much higher and will speed the bluray rip time substantially, especially for UHD discs with Dolby Vision/Atmos and HDR 10 +. While I have no doubt that an external drive would work with a USB A connection, I have a hard time understanding why external drive case manufacturers do not offer a USB C onboard connection. Maybe it's that hardly anyone uses bluray disc drives and media because it's it's easier to stream or to get from "friends" who have the capability to encode these discs.

I may get a USB A enclosure if there is no other viable option available, but I'm hoping that someone here may have run across an available option worth looking into.

Its more to do with the maximum rate at which the disc can physically be ripped, which is under 480mb which is usb2. Now I wish for a usb c enclosure for the higher power it can deliver but the rip speed wont be any different whether its a mini or c cable as long as its getting proper power.

As has already been mentioned, USB 3.0 makes zero difference to disc read speed. It will not make a disc read faster and will continue to read at the exact same speed as when connected to USB 2.0.
