Are any "4K" slim bluray drives on amazon trustworthy?
Hello, I guess disney has forced me into getting a 4k drive to play atmos tracks thats only on the 4k disc, so trying to find one on amazon. Would I be able to wait to save up for more amazon giftcards or should I buy one now? the only two that look trust worthy are

I've seen the other posts about guaranteed to work drives but those are so expensive.
Thanks.

I can confirm that the first link is a valid drive. I bought that same one like a month ago although it took several weeks to ship (I finally got it last week). I was able to flash it and confirmed I could rip 4K discs with it.

I just bought the XRTFORE external 4K UHD drive on Amazon. It had a BDRE BU40N drive with 2016 firmware. It successfully flashed to Libre with the SDFtool flasher and I've used Makemkv on 9 UHD BD-100 discs so far with no problems. The drive is stated to also support BDXL 128GB discs. Read rate was steady at 6.0x and I plugged the drive into a powered USB hub. Very happy with my purchase and the information and resources here to flash the drive.

I bought a second XRTFore as backup. It also was a BU40N drive, flashed firmware to 1.03 and now supports Libre and also rips UHD 4K discs successfully. Safely put away for the future in the nice Carry Case it came with.bobajames1 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 17, 2026 1:55 amI just bought the XRTFORE external 4K UHD drive on Amazon. I know its not on amazon but if you are US based. I would suggest checking any local Staples store. I read on here on friday someone saw Verbatim blu ray drives in stock. they wont show up online so you need to visit the actual store. I have gone to three stores local to me and have picked up Verbatim 43890 models. all with pioneer drives. its worth taking a look if you are able.

Hello, is the Verbatim model the same as the Kiab model ref: 4388?
If it works with MakeMkv, how long does it take to burn a 4K Blu-ray? Thank you.

You don't "burn" a 4K blu-ray as there is no such thing as blank 4K discs.
If you are talking about the Verbatim 43888 with a LG BU40N inside, "ripping" a 4K UHD disc takes anywhere from 45mins to 90mins.
Cheers

Yes, I meant ripping a 4K Blu-ray.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Wed Jan 21, 2026 11:57 pmYou don't "burn" a 4K blu-ray as there is no such thing as blank 4K discs.

Other questions: with the firmware flashed for ripping, is it possible to burn a data Blu-ray disc?
Also, if you flash a Blu-ray player to rip using Make MKV software, could this reduce the player's lifespan?
Thanks

Flashing a drive doesn't change any of the existing features. It just adds the ability to rip UHD discs.gock01 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 8:26 amYes, I meant ripping a 4K Blu-ray.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Wed Jan 21, 2026 11:57 pmYou don't "burn" a 4K blu-ray as there is no such thing as blank 4K discs.

Why are you now talking about blu-ray players? We don't have anything to do with blu-ray players. These are PC optical drives. No, ripping will not reduce the optical drive's lifespan. Quite the opposite. Ripping a disc once vs playing/watching a disc multiple times. Which one do you think would cause more wear and tear??

When I said "Blu-ray player," I was referring to the player in question, namely the Verbatim player, model number 4388.

Re: Are any "4K" slim bluray drives on amazon trustworthy?
Please learn at least some of the correct terminology. PC optical drives are not called "players". When you use incorrect terminology, it gets confusing for everyone. And it is Verbatim 43888, not 4388.gock01 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 10:06 amOkay, thanks.MartyMcNuts wrote: ↑Thu Jan 22, 2026 9:43 amFlashing a drive doesn't change any of the existing features. I bought the Xrtfore from Amazon, as well. Here's what MakeMKV says about the drive:bobajames1 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 20, 2026 2:39 amI bought a second XRTFore as backup. Drive Information
Manufacturer: Generic
Product: External
I decided to give the DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK firmware a try, and it worked. I've used it to successfully rip several UHD 4K disks.
