Just to follow up, I finally received the drive (an LG BP60NB10), flashed it, and it seems to be ripping 4k just fine. Thanks! :D

Hello, I am considering buying a new Asus BW-16D1X-U. I'd like some tips. How to find out before buying that the drive can be flashed? Will information about the year of production help? Is information about the year of release or firmware version necessary before purchasing? Will the appropriate firmware be released by December 2022? Please help.

You can't find anything out until you have it in hand and can post the MakeMKV drive info and libredrive info sections. They either use a Pioneer (firmware on it should be pre 12/2022) or LG drive inside and both should be able to be flashed.

Libredrive is enabled so is good for standard blu-ray. It cannot read UHD discs until you get it cross-flashed to a UHD model Pioneer. Contact Billycar11.

I have been using this drive for a few years for Blu-ray's, however would like to now use it for UHD discs. Can someone help with updating the firmware? Right now it just says this disc is not supported.
