Troubles ripping Elephant (2003)

I'm trying to rip the R1 America - HBO DVD release of Elephant (2003).

Each time I open the disc in MakeMKV, it takes several hours to load the titles, during which the CSS sectors steadily counts up into the millions. Depending on the DVD structure protection removal method used, I sometimes get past the opening process to the point where I can rip four titles, one of which is the main feature.

Once I start to save the titles, however, MakeMKV successfully rips the three non-main feature titles (HBO title slides, etc.) and immediately fails to rip the main feature. Trying to rip just the main feature also results in immediate failure. Here is the log file:

I've tried using the four different DVD structure protection removal methods (Auto, CellWalk, CellTrim, CellFull) with no success. Although IIRC, some of the methods did not properly identify the main feature.
I've cleaned the disc thoroughly.
On a long shot, I tried following the suggestion of a different user on this forum and tried ripping the movie while having it open in VLC... that didn't work.
I'm using an ASUS Blu-ray drive that I've successfully used to rip dozens of other Blu-ray 4K UHD discs, Blu-ray Discs, and DVDs before and after attempting Elephant (2003).

I tried creating a backup of the DVD as well. The backup hung at ~74 MB, ran for a while longer (maybe about an hour?), and then eventually failed. Log below:
