(UPDATE: Fixed with KeyDB Helper!) True Lies 4K UHD reporting "volume key is unknown" error

Post by HurlyGurly »

UPDATE 12/25/2025: Happy Christmas to all! I had found a post by SamuriHL (viewtopic.php?p=166510#p166510) with instructions to use their KeyDB Helper tool. I installed the tool and used the "Synchronize" option first, then used "Disc Info" to check my disc; here's what was reported back:

It found that my DiscID wasn't present in KeyDB and updated that file. It then tried to start a "Validate" action but hung (bug?), so I killed the application and ran it again, then selected "Validate". Here's what was reported:

This action validated that my KeyDB now had my DiscID present. It looks like the process tried to send the change that was performed back to the OnlineDB host to sync the master file, but a HTTP 503 (service unavailable) was reported by that web site.

A final "Disc Info" execution confirmed that everything looked good:

Running MakeMKV against the disc is now working as expected. A big thanks to SamuriHL for this tool!

Only question now is...what's needed to add my update to the master KeyDB file since the automated approach didn't work?

(Original post)

When attempting to use MakeMKV with the True Lies 4K UHD disc, I receive the dreaded "The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted" message. Reviewing previous posts regarding this message, I downloaded the latest keydb.cfg from http://fvonline-db.bplaced.net/ (LastUpdate: 2025-12-24 20:54:04) and dropped it in my .MakeMKV folder as KEYDB.cfg...but this didn't fix the issue.

Here's what MakeMKV is reporting:
