New to drive flashing WH16NS60

#1 Post by retromaniacjames » Sun Dec 21, 2025 4:15 am

I am interested in upgrading my drive to LibreDrive but I am not exactly sure how to do it, Looks like my current firmware is too high being 1.03 that I need to downgrade to 1.02 and then flash the patch to it. I want to get the drive flashed but I also do not want to attempt it and mess it up resulting in a doorstop.

Can someone more familiar with this please explain it to me in baby steps.

This is what MakeMKV reports for my drive, and I have used the SDF tool to backup my current firmware, the drive works for reading and writing discs currently.

Flash directly to WH16NS60 1.02-MK and you are good to go.
Cheers :D

okay because I downloaded the mk-firmware-pack-20200720.zip and inside I see a single firmware file that has the filename
HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.BIN

is the the correct patched file to flash onto the drive, or is that an old original firmware?

the folder structure inside the archive is MK / HL-DT-ST/WH16NS60/

In that firmware pack, inside the "MK/old" folder is the WH16NS60 1.02 firmware.

okay thank you :D

and just to make sure I fully understand, all i need to do is in the mk/old folder find that firmware file and flash that to the drive and it is a already patched libredrive firmware for the drive.

Because I read before I had to downgrade and then flash the patched firmware. That was the main part I was confused about before but if I don't need to worry about that then awesome

Yep, just flash the WH16NS60 1.02 from the MK/old folder and it's done!

Thank you MartyMcNuts! Just finished flashing the drive (after I took 2 regular firmware dumps, and 2 firmware dumps with bootloader enabled), figured that would be the best option is it failed flashing but worked first attempt!
