SummerSlam 1988 fails rip.

Post by jeromewink » Thu Dec 18, 2025 12:47 am

I have ripped my entire collection of DVD's but can't get 1 to rip. When I google I find in other sources that other users are having issues with this exact disc. So it seems like a bad Master. It plays just fine in any DVD player so it's not like the whole thing is unreadable. I have 3 DVD drives and there is no difference when using any of them and the disc is in very good shape. I tried this years ago and since then several MakeMKV releases show "Improved handling for discs with mastering errors" but that does not seem to have fixed anything.

Is there anything I can do differently?

You could try making a decrypted backup of the disc (icon of yellow folder with green arrow on MakeMKV's first screen) and opening the resulting .iso file with MKVToolNix GUI and trying to create a .mkv file that way. I have no idea if it'll work.

The decrypted backup works. So this maybe indicates that there's nothing physically wrong with the disc but rather Mkv isn't extracting files correctly?

In my experience, the problem with DVDs is the specification for how titles get stored on the DVD allows for a lot of interpretation. Studios did all kinds of crazy things to make the discs harder to rip and consequently MakeMKV sometimes has difficulty interpreting the structure of a given disc. MakeMKV has different DVD opening modes to try to accommodate all the weirdness possible with the structure of a DVD.

By having MakeMKV just make a decrypted backup of a disc, all it has to do is correctly read the data off the disc and remove the encryption. It does not have to try to interpret the disc's structure to find the titles you want to rip. So yes, it seems the disc is fine and can be read properly but its title structure is confusing. You can open that backup with MakeMKV, perhaps trying the different DVD opening modes, to have it try to interpret the disc's structure. You can try to open the backup with other things like the MKVToolNix GUI and see if it has better luck navigating the discs's structure.

I should also say that blu-rays don't seem to befuddle MakeMKV in the ways that DVDs do. I know that not everything that was released on DVD has been released on blu-ray, but I've been trying to upgrade all my DVD titles to blu-rays as I've been ripping my disc collection.
