Casablanca DVD Rip and Transcode- Always a Narration

Post by pparker900 » Sun Dec 14, 2025 6:01 pm

Hi folks. I didn't see anything on this so excuse me if this is redundant. I've ripped a Casablanca disk several times with MakeMKV, testing it by playing it back as an MKV file, so I *believe* I have the right file. That said, when I transcode it, there is a historcial narration of the movie. The MKV file I extract plays back correctly, just as the dvd does when I play it. Since I am transcoding this same file, where is the narration coming from and how do I stop it? Sadly, it takes 6 hours to find out if I've done it right, or wrong. Guidance would be appreciated!

Assuming you copied the entire movie, your transcoding software may do like handbrake does... assume you want the "best" sound.

Casablanca, though, is like a number of other old movies; its mono soundtrack was transcoded as stereo, and the commentary is encoded as "modern" 5.1 audio. You need to manually select the proper audio, because automatic will go for the commentary.

Wow, that's interesting! I'm using WinXvideo AI to upscale it, which works. As for the sound, the only thing WinXvideo says is "passtrhu", but I remeber seeing a choice of AAC 1 channel or 2 channels when I used the WinX DVD Ripper. It will look at the settings for MakeMKV (preferred ripping tool). and then see if I can change anything on the WinXvideo AI tool.

You could also set the 'default' audio track in MKVtoolNix or just remove the other unwanted tracks before sending it WinXvideo
