Request to enable LibreDrive on ASUS BW-16D1X-U

Post by newsoftheworld »

Hi All,

Apologies in advance if I've posted this in the wrong area. I have an ASUS BW-16D1X-U. I'd love to have some assistance please to see if I it is possible to change the firmware on this drive to enable LibreDrive?

I would be using a Mac to run any flashing software. Also is it possible to save the existing firmware so that I could always go back to that if the drive started misbehaving, or is that not possible?

Drive Information
Manufacturer: ASUS
Product: BW-16D1X-U
Revision: A105
Serial number:
Firmware date: 2120-12-02 11:14
Bus encryption flags: 1F
Highest AACS version: 75

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

Thank you

Hi Coopervid,

Thank you for your reply. I've tried to make sense of the 'Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025'

Can I confirm if my drive is capable of being patched please? I just want to get some guidance so that I don't damage the drive or do something I regret.

I was going to use the SDFtool Flasher but it looks like that windows only and I'm on a Mac. Do I use some Mac software or just command line entry in Terminal. I'd prefer a GUI software if available.

I've downloaded the files from here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HRnbXi ... sp=sharing

Can you advise me which one do I use? The only ASUS one I can see is 'ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin' is this the one I need?

Any leadership you can provide to steer me away from the pitfalls would be appreciated. Thank you.

ASUS don't make drives. The drive inside your enclosure is a LG. Flash it to LG WH16NS60 1.02-MK firmware. This is the recommended firmware which reads faster and removes the sleep bug affecting UHD discs.

Yes, on Mac you can use terminal or SDFtool Flasher if using a compatible VM.
Cheers :D

Hi MartyMcNuts,

Thank you for your reply. I don't have VM of windows on my Mac or access to a windows machine so will be using Terminal on the Mac which I have very little experience of. So I have done this so far:

1) I've copied the file 'HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin' to the tmp folder. Is this the correct file?
2) I've navigated to the location: /Applications/MakeMKV.app/Contents/MacOS/
3) I've located my IOBDServices identifier and mine is called EAAE8032
4) As I understand it I need to copy an sdf.bin file to the tmp folder next. When I look at the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025. There are links to both ASUS and LG. Not sure which I need. Is this the correct file? https://www.mediafire.com/file/mezq26ac ... 9.zip/file
5) when I have this sdf.bin file and added it to the tmp folder am I correct that all I need do next is to paste the following command:

./makemkvcon f -d /IOBDServices/EAAE8032 -f /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash main -i /tmp/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

David

Thank you Billycar11,

so like this:
./makemkvcon f -d /IOBDServices/EAAE8032 -f /tmp/sdf.bin rawflash enc -i /tmp/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

As I understand it I need to copy an sdf.bin file to the tmp folder next. When I look at the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025. There are links to both ASUS and LG. Not sure which I need?

Can you direct me to the location of the correct sdf.bin file that I need please?

HI All,

I found the sdf.bin file (on the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025 (for other Mac users it's not in the Unlocked Flashers, Downgrade Enabled Firmware and MK Firmware section but in the How To Flash Videos and commands section below it).

Everything went very smoothly. Thank you all. The only thing I thought I'd check with you all is that I observed an error code:
'Command produced error code 0x82062900'

Can anyone confirm please that this error code is nothing to be concerned about and all is well?

see below copy and paste from Terminal:

Yep, that's fine. Nothing to worry about. The flash either worked or it didn't. From the info provided, it worked.
Cheers :D

Hi MartyMcNuts,

Thank you for your reply and your support and advice. Good to know I can ignore the error. I tested the drive yesterday and it ripped a 4k of Get Carter (75gb) in just over an hour. The film played back fine.

Kind Regards,

David
