Help Identifying the Referenced Forum Post

Post by solstice43 »

Hello,
I got a Read Error while ripping a disc and MakeMKV helpfully provided a link to https://www.makemkv.com/errors/read/

This page very clearly outlines the reason for the error and directs the reader to the forum for info on converting disc copies into encrypted MakeMKV backup. I have tried running searches of the forum to find posts related to this topic, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm searching for. Is there a pinned post or some other definitive guide to the solution the Read Errors page is referring to?

Thanks!

There's literally thousands of posts about read errors. Just start by cleaning the disc. This usually resolves 99% of read errors. If that doesn't help, copy and paste the text from MakeMKV's log window and I'm sure someone will assist you.
Cheers :D

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm not looking for info about the read error. I'm looking for the solution referenced on the linked page of copying the disc and creating an encrypted MakeMKV backup.

There's no guide or specific reference. To create an encrypted backup, click the folder icon at the top menu and uncheck the decrypt box in the popup window.

As I said, the solution that works with read errors 99% of the time is to clean the disc before trying again.
Cheers :D

Thanks for the follow-up.

Cleaning didn't change the result. The disc looks perfect from a visual inspection but I know looks perfect and is perfect are two different things.

The recommended solution at https://www.makemkv.com/errors/read/ talks about copying the files manually to the hard drive and then "convert such copy into encrypted MakeMKV backup that can be opened by MakeMKV later". What I'm not following is creating the encrypted backup of the files that I manually copied to the hard drive. The backup tool seems to only let me select the disc drive as a source. I tried using the backup tool on the disc and got a different error: "Backup done but 1 files failed hash check". I'm guess this is essentially the same issue as the read error.

When the instructions say "to copy all files from the disc to the hard drive manually", does that actually mean to create an ISO of the disc? I'm not seeing a way to create a backup from local files.
