Will Many Internal BD Drive Scratch Your Discs?

Post by zoom+slomo »

After downloading the trial version of JRiver I used it to play a favorite DVD in my collection. When done and I clicked eject I noticed two somewhat deep scratches on the disc surface. The disc still plays okay, but I do NOT want a repeat of this! But are scratched optical media by my LG WH16NS60 and many other internal drives a frequent occurrence? What causes it?
And what if anything can be done to stop it at least reduce the chances of it happening?

One thing I noticed is that when I click eject the LG WH16NS60's tray opens way faster than my Oppo, Pioneer and JVC BD and DVD players, and it sounds like it's being pushed opened with great force. Might this be the cause of the disc getting scratched? If so, what can be done to reduce the tray door opening speed? If yes, is there any setting in Windows to reduce the tray door opening speed? Or might there be some app that can do that?

I don't have one but has anyone noticed if the ASUS https://www.microcenter.com/product/479 ... toreID=171 and/or other brand external BD drive models have tray doors that open slowly like probably most standalone BD players do? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMdyiFgwEzg

The ASUS's external BD drive's disc handling doesn't seem to be any more delicate than the LG internal drive did at 3:36

Would my DVDs and BD movie discs be a lot safer if used with the ASUS or which recommended external BD drive?

Any PC optical drive can scratch a disc if the drive is slightly off balance or the disc is slighlty warped. It is not recommended to play a disc. Better off ripping it so you are only reading the disc once and you can watch the MKV file as much as you like.
Cheers :D

With my huge DVD and BD collection of treasured TV episodes and movies there's no way that I'd have time to rip and save even a third of them in the same quality anytime soon. Select audio CD track rips and 24 bit downloads are what I will be saving to a server, once I finish building my new sound system.

At least I can use JRiver for music files and playing youtube videos on my 24" Eizo monitor; they'd look too crappy on my Sony 65" OLED.

BINGO! The new Magnetar 800MK2 has all of my Oppo 203's features and more. And years before I'd have to start worrying about replacement parts. On sale. https://www.magnetarusa.com/pages/udp-800mkii
