Impressed with LG BU40N so far.

#1 Post by uhdcanuck » Thu Nov 13, 2025 5:52 pm

Just got myself a LG BU40N and tested it out. Holy cow. Color me impressed. This thing breezed through all the problematic discs I had (Aliens, Abyss... most Cameron discs and the brand new Sound of Music 4k disc) without even breaking a sweat. My old LG WH16NS60 always had a bit of problem with 100gb discs, so this is a very nice change indeed. Wow, if BU40N is this good, how good is Pioneer BDR-US04? I also have a Verbatim 48333 is on its way here from the UK. I was a bit concerned to hear all the new 48333 now has LG BU40N in it instead of Pioneer BU40N, but not really worried anymore. I guess I'll have two BU40Ns to work with. Not the worst. Although it'd still be nice that if the new Verbatim turned out to be a Pioneer, but either way, I am very happy with LG BU40n. Didn't expect it to work this good I guess!

It's the best LG but not as good as Pioneer drives.

~500 discs and it will die. Just happened to me. You may get lucky, but I’ve seen many post with similar results as me.

I am taking a gamble and purchased a $60 pioneer BDR-UD03 on eBay from china. I took apart the verbatim and took out the BU40N and will slap the pioneer inside and see what happens. If it works it’ll be a nice pioneer drive with usb c connectivity.

Oh man. Please let me know how that Chinese Pioneer drive from Ebay work out. It's a bit too early but I might as well have some contingency plans in place. Btw. Is there anyway to tell if those are genuine Pinoeer drives or some kind of knock-offs?

What do you guys use for a sled or case for the LG BU40N? I bought one but it was crap, the only thing useful about it was the SATA 13PIN to USB connector was good.

I have this drive:
https://ultrahd-drives.com/products/ver ... libredrive

I wonder if it will play The Sound of Music 4k disc (I haven't bought it yet).
I read a review at amazon which says:
Incompatible with UltraHD 4K Blu-Ray players before AACS 2.3 mastering keys. I have an LG UBK80 and it plays my other UltraHD 4K Blu-Ray disks without a problem. This one one spins up and loads to the HDR screen and then drops back to the menu. My player is less than 5 years old and uses AACS 2.2.
But I don't know what this drive uses...

By the way: I had another LG BU40N that lasted for 4 years. (after that, it wouldn't be recognized by my pc at all)
