Error about DvdFab/MacTheRipper

Post by rosede » Wed Nov 05, 2025 9:13 pm

I just upgraded to v.1.18.2. I'm using a Windows 11 machine.

I just received a new stack of DVD's and when I attempt to rip the DVD's, I get the followin pop up
It appears that you are opening the disc processed by DvdFab/MacTheRipper which is known to produce damaged VOB files. Errors may follow - Please use original disc instead
These are new factor sealed discs. Is this an issue? Is there a setting I can tweak or adjust, or is just ignoring it okay? So far I have not had any issues. They've been ripping without issue.

Thanks

I've only seen it as a false positive, but it can be a strong hint at having gotten bootlegs.

Prior to posting this question, I searched for this message in the forum and didn't hit any previous posts, however, since posting this, I did find someone had posted a similar message previously and yes, it appears that my discs are counterfeit. The replies in the previous post points out that the discs are not encrypted and are single layer. I confirmed, these do not have encryption and are only single layer. :x

I bought these new from a Ebay vendor. The discs are pressed, not copied. The sleeves are printed, not copied, there are ad's included in the case and the cases are factory wrapped. Damn good counterfeits, but counterfeits none the less. I suspect that the vendor won't refund my money, but I'm going to try.

Thanks for the reply

I know the feeling. I've tried my best to avoid them, knowing they exist, but I've ordered a couple that Wally World normally stocks (but not deeply enough that I could pick them up when I went there), that were physically so close to the real things, it was unreal (no MakeMKV warnings, but unencrypted single-layer discs, whereas the legit ones were all 7.7GB+). The slip cover on one set looked and felt like a perfect copy, and the inserts were so close you couldn't trust someone else's video or photo to tell them apart (extremely minor color differences). The discs themselves were close enough to not look bootleg at a casual glance, but they were different enough that online photos of the real ones made it plain that they were fakes.

Do an Item not as described return. Ebay will refund you. If it's something still in print, try Amazon, sold and fulfilled by Amazon. If it's older, try getting used-looking sets, especially from people with more used items, or Goodwill (try shopgoodwill.com, too). Just be prepared to get out the car polish and dish detergent.
