ASUS_BW-16D1HT question

#1 Post by ricola » Thu Sep 18, 2025 7:53 pm

Hi all,

So I just successfully flashed my ASUS_BW-16D1HT from 3.11 (from factory) to 3.10MK and now am curious if there is any reason to try moving to a different FW or just stay here?

Thanks!

You can stay, ripping and burning will be fine. But you'll have the sleep bug. You can avoid by flashing to WH16NS60 1.02MK. Ripping and burning will also be fine and no bug.

In addition: The WH16NS60 1.02 handles 3-layer UHDs (>66GB) better reading them in. The ASUS firmware will often make some sick noises reading them in and will sometimes also fail to do so.

For years I was using an ASUS BW-16D1HT with the factory 3.10 firmware. At some point it started making the chonking noises and leaving with "no disk inserted." I assumed it was just failing until I saw this thread. It can open bluray disks but not UHD disks. So far I haven't had any luck with any of these FW options:

mk-firmware-pack-20200720/MK/ASUS/BW-16D1HT/ASUS-BW-16D1HT-3.10-WM01601-211901041014.bin
mk-firmware-pack-20200720/MK/HL-DT-ST/WH16NS60/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-NM00600-212005081010.bin
mk-firmware-pack-20200720/MK/old/HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin

That last one seems like what you're recommending here but I wanted to be explicit. Is there another FW I should try or is this likely a hardware issue with newer disks with BDXL, etc?

Either way I'm waiting for news about modern Pioneer drives. Thanks all.

Try the WH16NS60 1.02MK with the HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin.

If you're not lucky you're free to test another.

Post your Makemkv info. Seems libredrive is not enabled and your drive is not flashed to MK firmware.

Oh, I'm sorry, in hurry I didn't seen some details. :(

Yeah, first post your drive information with MakeMKV. Your drive must have the technical platform MT1959 and not MT1939.

Maybe I should clarify as well that it used to be able to rip UHDs with the factory 3.10 but at some it started failing to open. I assumed it was hardware failing (and it might still be). It's still able to read regular blu-rays but maybe that's separate hardware or something. This thread gave me hope that new FW might bring new life to an old drive.

No, firmware most likely won't make any difference. Try cleaning the drive lasers.
Cheers :D

Thanks. I've read it, but I'm not able to find a solution for layer changing problem. Maybe I've missed something...

Well, then let me explain it in a few words. Most issues occur at the layer break. With spare areas the drive reads back an unsuccessful written sector and writes it instead in the spare area. So the bad sector at the layer break is replaced by that and the layer break doesn't cause problems anymore. However, disc quality of most disc types is very bad today. And the problem increases if you have a lousy writer like LG and ASUS drives. So just try this method and most likely your burns will not fail anymore at the layer break.
