[FIXED]PC reboots immediately when processing Blu Ray titles

Post by Gatorguy »

I recently installed an ASUS BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu Ray Drive and a new Rosewill SATA Controller Card (RC-215) in my older desktop PC running Windows XP with a Pentium 4 3.06ghz processor and 1GB RAM.

I can run MakeMKV and make mkv files from all my DVDs with no issues at all on this setup.

As soon as I start analyzing a Blu Ray, the decrypting finishes without issue and right as the processing of the titles begins, the PC reboots suddenly.

I've watched the CPU load, temps and RAM utilization. Nothing seems abnormal. I've looked in Windows Event Viewer and didn't see anything abnormal. I've tried logging MakeMKV but didn't see anything meaningful to me in the log.

I have used BurnImg to make an .iso of a Blu Ray from this setup with no issues.

I've googled and read a lot, but haven't come up with any answers. What may be my problem? Thanks for your help.

Did you install any 3rd party UDF driver? Especially from the disc that came with your reader?

I did install a file I downloaded called "UDFReaderv25.zip" which allows me to read the contents of a blu ray disk in Windows Explorer. Might that be the problem?

I did not see any UDF driver on the ASUS disk that came with the drive. The disk only had 3 pieces of software and I installed them all.

1. E-Green - power conservation
2. E-hammer - used to wipe CD-R disks
3. Power2Go 7 - used to burn disks

Yes. This driver is very buggy and makes the system crash on new discs.

MakeMKV has a built-in UDF parser so it doesn't need this (or similar) driver. I don't know a single good UDF file-system driver that works on XP. On the other hand you really don't need to see the disc contents in explorer.

Before switching to Vista, I used the following UDF 2.50 driver with no problems noted:

Toshiba_qg600udfx.exe

As this was a few years ago, I cannot attest to how it behaves with newer releases...

First, thanks for the help so far. Largely because of the support you have given to me as a non-paying person, I went ahead and purchased a full version of MakeMKV (order *****690) to show gratitude to your generosity of time and also to be a permanent part of a great product. Thank you.

If I recall correctly, my PC was rebooting suddenly "before" I installed the Toshiba UDF 2.5 driver. I was trying to fix the rebooting issue when I installed the driver.

Regardless, I deleted thdudf.inf and thdudf.pnf from \windows\inf and thdudf.sys from \windows\system32\drivers.

Additionally I deleted two registry keys:
HKLM,"Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\%thdudfKey%"
HKLM,"System\CurrentControlSet\Services\%thdudfKey%\Parameters"

Funny thing is that after I reboot, I can still browse the Blu Ray disk in Windows Explorer.

I try to google stuff and read and learn on my own without bothering anybody, but I am at a loss to what is making the PC just suddenly reboot after decrypting is done (on Blu Ray only).

Do you think it is a software conflict causing the sudden reboot? Maybe it is some other dvd burning software installed?

Do you think this could be a software issue? Any advice?
Thanks in advance!

Please search for "how to remove filter drivers". The first result that pops up is very informative - http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic137666.html

"Fact is, most people aren't aware of filters so they're easily over-looked as a problem source"

That quote was from the link you provided and described me perfectly.

I followed the information on the link and deleted the two registry values cited and it fixed my issue! I'm now ripping my first blu ray on my new drive!

Thank you very much for your help and support. I understand now my issue wasn't with MakeMKV software, but I greatly appreciate your help anyway. I'm glad I was able to purchase and donate to the cause!
