Firmware type: Original (unpatched)
Firmware version: 1.10/ID61

Any help in enabling/unlocking this drive would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

Hope you are well. I just got a UHD Blu-Ray set that contains 2 regular Blu-Ray discs and one UHD disc. I'd like to get the copy of the film off the UHD as it has a Dolbe Atmos audio track and a Dolbe Digital audio track with English language audio description for the blind (that's the only reason I got the copy). The regular Blu-Ray has a 7.1 DTS HDMA and AC3 track for these 2 language settings, respectively, so it's a bit down-graded.

I have the Pioneer BDR-XD08U, and it claims to be UHD compatible, and I can hear in This PC the drive name and the Blu-Ray name. However, Make MKV can't open the UHD disc, saying that my drive isn't LibreDrive enabled.

As this is my first Blu-Ray experience, I didn't know that there's a step I should have done 3 years ago when I got the drive. I'm afraid I'm running into a tricky situation. What should I do?

Many thanks,

David

Your firmware is too new. You have to wait until Mike comes up with a solution. No ETA.

Oh no, and I didn't do anything to the drive. This condition was what it came in.

And wow, it's been 3 years and no solution? Perhaps I'm really unfortunate. And it took me 3 years to find out, too, LOL.

If you had purchased the drive a little sooner you would've been able to avoid the unfortunate Pioneer firmware. The short history is after MakeMKV was updated to support ripping UHDs from Pioneer drives that supported reading UHDs, Pioneer eventually released a firmware update for all their drives with the only real purpose of preventing MakeMKV from working to rip UHDs. Generally speaking Pioneer drives are the best at ripping discs.
Now that Pioneer has gotten out of the business of making optical drives, MakeMKV's author, Mike, has stated that eventually all Pioneer drives will be supported. Until that happens, there's not much that can be done if the drive has too new of firmware.

If you don't want to wait, the easiest thing to do is get a different, additional drive. The availability of Pioneer drives with the correct firmware has been reduced to almost zero, however. (If you're in the USA, Billycar11 has said he's going to get one last shipment of Pioneer drives soon. If you're in Europe, Asmcom might have some when they reopen.) The next best thing is a drive that contains an LG BU40N.

Wow, so it looks like I need to get my hands on a drive soon. But that means the one I already have... Hmm, all this is sad to hear, but thank you!

And, I am in the USA.

I currently have external USB 3 drives for sale with flashable Pioneer drives inside. I'm in the USA. See my thread here:

Oh no! I am in this same boat. I've had this drive forever and recently got back to ripping my collection. I've had several discs fail (well, maybe 4-5 discs out of 100 or so so far) so I thought I'd go update the drive's firmware and see if that helped. Now I'm on 1.04 (same drive as @DavidLai).
