makemkv LG WH16NS60 4K UHD no disc inserted

I see several threads about this (topic), but I have not found a solution yet. Of course I have tried rebooting, removing the drive, adding it back, blinking twice then turning it on, et cetera. All to no avail, so far.

I am running Windows 11, with an new LG WH16NS60 from NewEgg. It is in an 'OWC Mercury Pro 5.25" Optical Drive External Enclosure (NO Drive)' from Amazon. And I am using a "JSAUX USB 3.0 Cable B Male to USB-C, 6.6ft USB 3 Type B Cord Nylon Briaded" cable. The discs are also brand new, specifically all four of the Matrix films, in 4K UHD.

My current setup, according to MakeMKV BETA v1.18.1:

MakeMKV was giving me issues about a license or something, and I was using a temporary fix license, but am currently using this license: MakeMKV is free while in beta If I need to buy the software, that is fine by me.

I used the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2025 as my guide. The guide provides different paths towards the same end, which is great, but also confusing. This link says to use various firmware upgrade tools, and to download the firmware from Google Drive Link.

If you want me to upgrade, please provide the makemkvcon64.exe command line you want me to use. The current --help does not show a lot of the options and parameters which I have read within this forum. I have been using the "How To Flash Videos and commands:" section of the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide, but am not quite sure if I need to use the encryption option or not. "HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.03-N000600-212005081010.bin" appears to be the only version which is encrypted, according to the Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide. The Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide has a link for LG drives, and it points to this ASUS related thread: Re: Firmware downgrade using official (patched) flasher, the "Ultra hax0r guide". Again, I would rather use the makemkvcon64.exe program for flashing.

Please advise.

Your drive is already libredrive enabled and UHD compatible. No need to flash. Just clean the discs before trying again.

@MartyMcNuts, as creative a remedy you have provided, I am not sure how to express that this issues seems to go beyond a dirty disc. Perhaps if "clean the discs" is code for some extremely complex recompiling of the disc similar to a disk defragmentation, then maybe this is something to explore.

Perhaps we can move forward with the assumption that the discs are clean. Also, before anyone mentions it, the computer is powered on!

What might the next step in trouble-shooting this issue possibly be?

Just because a disc is brand new, right out of the package doesn't mean it is clean. I've had to clean several brand-new discs to get them to rip.

If you want to move past the obvious answer, then get another copy of the disc. And perhaps get an additional drive. Personally, I have four different optical drives on my desk. Sometimes a drive just doesn't seem to like a particular disc. Often when this is the case, one of my other drives will read the disc easily. On very rare occasions, I end up with a disc that won't work in any of my drives regardless of how much cleaning of the disc I do. In that handful of cases, a replacement disc has worked for me.

Cleaning the disc, usually means with soapy water and a soft microfiber cloth. Some people use glasses cleaner spray to clean the discs. They often have an invisible to the naked eye layer of film on them from the manufacturing process.

My go-to is a solution I originally made for print head cleaning, but it works very well on discs as it leaves no residue.

Simply one part household ammonia, one part distilled water, and two parts isopropanol or denatured ethanol (better).

Just remember that ammonia over (a fair amount of) time will make polycarbonate cloudy. So don't soak your disc with it or use this daily. But for an initial clean it works great.

My own wh16ns60 has problems with about 25% of new UHD discs until I clean them.
