FURIOSA_A_MAD_MAX_SAGA 'MEDIUM ERROR: L- EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' with 2 different discs at exact same offset

Hi,

I bought FURIOSA_A_MAD_MAX_SAGA, UHD i get the error
Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading 'BD-RE HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH16NS60 1.02 KLZJASJ3717' at offset '33645985792'

I tried multiple times, rebooted the computer just in case. Exchange the disc to get another disc, but I get the same error at the exact same offset. I can still rip other UHD, the drive does not seems to be problematic.

Makemkv 1.18.1 using a docker on linux on unraid.
BD-RE WH16NS60 - firmwarev 1.02
retry count is set at 30
Different disc with same error at same offset, makes me believe something not right on the drive or software side. Is there anything I can do other than buying a new drive to try to rip it?


this thread viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15055 mentions : "The first thing to know is that by the time you’ve seen one of these messages, the disc has been successfully decrypted so the problem is NOT decryption-related." but If I understand my logs properly, it happens while it's decrypting the UHD.

That's a triple layer disc. Is the drive struggling at the layer break? That might explain why it fails at the same offset on two discs.

Can the drive rip other triple-layer 4K UHDs?

I'm was previously able to rip Horizon UHD HDR disc which if I understood properly, is a triple layer disc.

After my failed attemps at ripping furiosa, I tried to rip Horizon disc again, and it worked. That makes me think that the drive is not on it's way to the grave yet.

MakeMKV will tell you how many layers a disc is. After you put in the disc and let MakeMKV read it (on MakeMKV's first screen), the information on the right will include how much data is on the disc and how many layers.

generally means that the optical drive was unable to correctly read that spot on the disc. The standard advice is to gently clean the disc and try again. Even if the disc is brand new, a good cleaning can help. Sometimes there are nearly invisible deposits on the disc either left over from the manufacturing process or as the result of off gassing of the plastic case that holds the disc.

Your next best option is a second drive. In my experience, some drives just don't like some discs. Personally, I'm up to four drives on my desk now. There is rarely a disc that can't be read by at least one of my drives. In the rare cases where I can't read a disc, a replacement disc has always worked.

I did try to wipe the disc, I went back to wallmart to exchange it too, but those steps did not resolve the issue. I guess I need to buy another drive.
Can you suggest a drive that would have more chance at reading that disc when my LG doesn't ready it. Should I go with another LG or Pionner or Asus?

Pioneers are held in high regard. Unfortunately, Pioneer has stopped making optical drives and supplies of new drives are dwindling.

Further complicating matters, Pioneer drives with firmware from December 2022 or later prevents the drives from working with LibreDrive.

Mike has stated that eventually all Pioneer drives will be made to work, but there's no ETA. https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=174108#p174108

To be clear, for a Pioneer drive to rip UHDs, it needs to support reading UHDs. If you look around the forum, you'll see people with older Pioneer drives that currently do not support UHD (even if they do support LibreDrive), but many of those drives can be flashed to be a Pioneer model that does support reading UHDs. To rip UHDs, the drive has to support reading UHDs and the drive's firmware has to support LibreDrive.

A seller in your region might have a Pioneer drive with the correct firmware. I have lost track of who has what stock left.

If tracking down a Pioneer seems like too much work, the next best thing is probably a LG BU40N based drive. That's LG's mobile drive platform, but it generally is considered better than LG's desktop platform these days.
