Hello, I'm facing an issue with my external Verbatim (Pioneer BD-RW BDR-UD03) device. Haven't been using it all that much, watched several BD movies, the last use was a few months ago, and now it just says "no disc inserted" (tried audio CDs, data DVDs, BDs, nothing can get read anymore).

Any chance to flash it or do whatever magic to get it to work once again? The unit was never dropped or in any way mechanically damaged that would prevent it from functioning properly. When the disc is inserted, the LED lits up for a second or two and then goes away.

Help will be appreciated, thanks.

Flashing it won't magically make it start working again...

You could start by cleaning the lasers and see if that helps.
Cheers :D

Tried it, both with QTips and a cleaning CD, no improvement. Is there some kind of software available that could test whether the head can actually move by itself or how to figure out what is actually wrong with the device?

The main reason for Verbatims going bad is the enclosure electronics. You could try to get it out and check with a mini SATA adapter on a desktop PC. If it works the next step could be buying a new enclosure for it or using a USB -> SATA adapter w/o a housing.

Actually tried that as well. Here's how it went down - I purchased the external Verbatim (inside is of course Pioneer), used it several times as an external, and then figured it is easier if I install it in my notebook drive bay. Plug & play, worked without issues. I've since switched to a notebook that doesn't have an ODD bay anymore, purchased an external ICY BOX enclosure (USB-C), inserted the Pioneer DVD inside, and it is properly recognised as a device, however it just won't read any discs. I've tried to put the DVD unit back into its previous notebook, and nope, it didn't decide it likes it better there, still no joy with it.

I just want to figure out if there is anything that could help, before discarding a DVD unit that had maybe 20-30 hours of play time at most since purchased new, with several burned CD/DVDs, and that's all, don't see how the lasers could fail, since they haven't even been run-in properly.

I've figured out that the head actually moves (if I manually pull it back, once it attempts to read the placed media, it retracts back to its default starting position, close to the center).

Thanks for the efforts.
