Feature Request: Selective Backup

#1 Post by JERisBRISK » Mon Apr 21, 2025 9:49 pm

We've all been there before... trying to back up a disc only to be met with the the dreaded read-error-retry spiral ultimately leading in hash check failure and a handful of missing files.

It would be amazing if full disc backup mode presented a choice: Full Disc or Partial backup. If Partial is chosen, a tree view comes up that shows the entire disc's file system with every file checked / selected by default. From there, the user could un-select everything or entire sub-trees, and then go and pick just the handful of files that didn't archive properly.

This would save a bunch of time when trying to re-attempt archival of a disc that was dirty or just a little scratched after cleaning or reparative work was done... rather than having to re-rip the entire disc, we only focus on the handful of files that need to be re-done.

Who's with me?

I think we're talking about the .m2ts files here? The ones that failed hash checks or failed to save during the initial backup?

Yeah sure, I'm with you on that.

Currently if I do a cleaning I have to redo a full backup, and sometimes if I'm lucky I'll get other failed files and I can just keep the good files and toss the bad ones eventually getting a good clean backup. But it would be nice just to retry a failed one under the backup option.

That is precisely my meaning.

I'm staring down the barrel of yet another episode of...
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:INVALID FIELD IN CDB' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00669.m2ts' at offset '31355043840'
Failed to save title /BDMV/STREAM/00669.m2ts to file C:/MakeMKV/backup/SOME_MOVIE/BDMV/STREAM/00669.m2ts
I'd love to not have to re-rip the entire disc, especially if the chance of other files going wonky due to an imperfect clean arises... even if the file that fails 99% of the time *is* the file that consumes 99% of the disc. LOL.

What would be really, *really* cool is if the MakeMkv could actually try to 'repair' a given file when the bad offset is known. Essentially let me eject the disc, clean it, re-insert it, and say "hey, you know the bad sector(s) you encountered before. Go re-read enough data to re-try and if you get it right, carry on. If you don't, retry (up the number of times allowed in the settings)."

You guys should clean in advance and not afterwards. That's what I always do. And there is ISOBuster for read errors. And there are Pioneer drives that read much better and have better error correction compared to LG / ASUS drives. In a nutshell: Do as much as you can do on your side and don't ask for baby sitting.
