MakeMKV 1.18.1 for Linux Hangs on new insallation

Post by coldfire05 » Tue Apr 22, 2025 5:37 pm

Hello All,

I have just finished building and and/or rebuilding 3 computer systems. 1 is an update from Linux Mint Cinnamon (here after referred to as LMC). 64bit, 19.3, to LMC 64, 22.1.
2nd computer system is a new build to LMC 64 bit 22.1
The Third is Windows 11 and that one is not an issue. <- has both type drives and all work well together no issues

ISSUE IS: After I have installed MakeMKV for Linux v.1.18.1 and I try to launch the program, it just hangs there saying that it is reading the drive information. Through a lot experimenting I have found that MakeMKV ONLY HANGS on all my drives that ARE NOT HD capable, and Flashed. Meaning that if I have an HD drive (M Disc capable) and its been flashed to read 4K discs, that MakeMKV has no problems with that particular drive. If they are not, then the program just hangs there. I even tried it with only one drive and still no deal, unless of course that drive is a FLASHED drive.

2 of the computers have 3 Blu-ray drives, and 1 computer has 4 of them. I spend a lot of time ripping my discs to file for my Plex server.

One of my Linux Mint computers is a MSI MB
Product Name: X570-A PRO (MS-7C37) - AMD RYZEN 9 3900X
Version: 3.0
BIOS: E7C37AM5.H70 BIOS DATE: 01/09/2020
32GB RAM
The Other computer that is running LMC 22.1
Product Name: ASUS P8P67 Pro - I7 3770
BIOS VER. 3602
BIOS DATE: 11/01/2012

The only common denominators are: The OS, and The drives used also the MakeMKV versions.

If you need more information please let me know.

I do appreciate all assistance y'all may have to offer.

TIA

I believe I have the same issue. I have two drives. One patched with libre drive, one without and it hangs at the same stop. Heres the log is that helps:

Interesting thing I just noticed, that is the Windows 11 computer has version 1.17.9 of MakeMKV on it, and so did one of the Linux computers that now currently has the latest version 1.18.1. and prior to the crash it had 1.17.9 on it with no issues at all.

Is it possible to get the 1.17.9 version for Linux?

TIA

I really don't want to have to buy more HD drives and flash them, as I back up the Blu-ray, and not the 4K so much, as they are quite the space HOG on my drives.

It installs fine when I do it exactly as the installation instructions tell me to do. The reason it seems to "hang" is because most of us are too impatient and don't wait for the installation process to complete. When installing the OSS package and you type "make" into the terminal, just walk away for a few minutes and have some tea, coffee, or something and watch some vids. Come back and it should be fine when the prompts are done. Then do the "sudo make install" command and go back to your coffee and vids. I think most people are used to super fast install speeds and that isn't always the case when doing it from the terminal.

Waiting 45 min is not being impatient! I get the program installed no problem, its the launching of the software, it hangs if there are REGULAR BR drives, but not when its a flashed
4k drive. I have been using this software for over 6 years, paid for it immediately and have installed it several times, never have had an issue till now.

I have been in to computers for over 50 years, back when it was referred to as "Data Processing".

d00zah,

Thank you for that. Now, how do you remove an installation of MakeMKV? As I want to completely remove ver 1.18.1, so I can install ver 1.17.9.

OR... is that not necessary?

TIA

Thank you for your reply, however as new as I am Linux, only been using it now for 6 years, and MakeMKV same time, all that you shared is a bit over my head. Hoping to learn more. Being at 70's doorway in life, switching OS's at this point isn't as easy as things once were.

Mahalo's!
