Why won't it see my drive?
Why won't it see my drive?
Well, I tried to use MakeMKV, but I can only use it for disks in my regular DVD drive (/dev/hda), isolating me exclusively to ripping conventional DVD disks.
Meanwhile, my Blu-Ray drive (/dev/sr0) is not recognized at all, even though I have access to it with various other programs, such as Xine, MPlayer, etc., and I can also mount disks in the Blu-Ray drive.
Wondering if it might be a Linux-related problem, I even installed the trial version again, this time in WindowsXP, then booted into that using my dual boot capability.
Once again, MakeMKV fails to see the Blu-Ray drive at all.
What in the world am I doing wrong here?
Is there some way to force MakeMKV to see my Blu-Ray at /dev/sr0?
Is there some kind of compile time option I need to build into my kernel, or some kind of kernel command line I need to execute to get it to work?
Also, why in the world won't XP, ordinarily an OS that works when all else fails, work?
I'm completely mystified.
I then tried to force it into working by mounting the disk in my Blu-Ray drive ("I Am Legend," for what it's worth), then pointed MakeMKV to it using the "Open files" command, going into [mount_point]/AACS/MKB_RO.inf.
It seems to see all the information there, seems to try to decode it, then errors out with the following message.
MakeMKV v1.6.16 linux(x64-release) started
Opening files on harddrive at /mnt/dvd/
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Failed to open disc
I don't get it.
This movie has been out for some time, so I just don't believe the key is unavailable.
I'm also under the impression that the program is failing to access the Net to retrieve updated keys.
I'm stumped, folks.

You'll need to wait for the developer to reply, I have no idea why you BR drive can't be seen. I don't have any problems getting any of mine to open.

Apologies for missing the thread. What is the output of the cmd below? Are you a member of "cdrom" group?
Code: Select all

Re: Why won't it see my drive?
Please enable debug log messages per instructions at http://www.makemkv.com/faq/item/8/catid/6 , close MakeMKV, start again. Will you see any messages in debug log?

Here is the contents of that log with a simple start only.

Re: Why won't it see my drive?
Something is holding your drive. To send scsi commands, MakemKV needs R/W access, but "open" fails. There must be some other application that holds the drive.
Aslso, MakeMKV has a builtin UDF 2.5 filesystem parser, so it obivously doesn't need one.

Now, I have no idea what could possibly be holding my my drive, since I don't have either Hald or udevd loaded, both of which I have seen affect the behavior of my DVD drives.
I should mention that my regular (non-Blu-Ray) DVD drive is recognized just fine by MakeMKV, and the only difference aside from the fact that it's not a Blu-Ray is that it is ATA and not SATA.
Is it possible that MakeMKV is burping because my Blu-Ray is SATA?
Or is it possible that my system being 64-bit is interfering with that as a combination?
I sure am scratching my head on this one.

Do you think Windows capacity influence it?oldpink wrote: Or is it possible that my system being 64-bit is interfering with that as a combination?

Re: Why won't it see my drive?
There are only two reasons "open" syscall could fail: bad permissions and sharing violdtion. Permissions are easy to check - try running makemkvcon as root. If it still fails, then it means some other program opened this device with exclusive R/W access.
Re: Why won't it see my drive?
I have to say that I've just about lost all patience with this issue.
First, I mounted the Blu-Ray disk I had in my drive, whose device name is /dev/sr0, on /mnt/dvd.
I then executed the following from the command line:
makemkvcon info file:/mnt/dvd
MakeMKV v1.6.16 linux(x64-release) started
Opening files on harddrive at /mnt/dvd
The volume key is unknown for this disc - video can't be decrypted
Opening files on harddrive at /mnt/dvd
Failed to open disc
Total 0 titles
I can even quite clearly see it spin up the drive to examine the contents while it does this.
As I said, I just don't believe something else is locking this drive as it were, especially not when I am able to insert regular DVD disks and audio CD disks and rip them with other programs.
The problem is with the program, not the drive.
Either that, or I don't know my own system.

Re: Why won't it see my drive?
New development, but still not quite there
I made some big changes to my system by finally enabling UDEV, which was a bit tricky until I figured out to disable "CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED" and "CONFIG_IDE."
MakeMKV now sees my Blu-Ray drive right away, but it still fails.
Here is the output of what happens when I tried to use it to read "I Am Legend":
