Need help with UHD disc with my lg bu40n

Post by Black Speedy »

I have an LG bu40n and just bought Bloodsport in 4k and wanted to rip it, however, my drive does not even recognize the disc (a 100gb disc )
Here is the info given by makemkv:

Drive Information
OS device name: L:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: [redacted]
Firmware date: 2118-10-24 19:34
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 72

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.03
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

The drive also had some issues not long ago with reading Blu-rays, but it seems it has fixed itself. I don't know if my drive is being weird or if it is just not capable of reading the disc, even though it should be able to (according to what I know).

I forgot to mention that it is still able to read a 4k disc such as Tangled

Give the disc a clean before trying again. Also, don't open MakeMKV until after the OS has initialised the disc.
Cheers :D

It does not seem to help 😕 Since the os doesn't recognize it either

A question I have is if it could be the firmware on the drive? I have a drive with a rom version of 1.04 (on the sticker) and I have as can be seen flashed it so it thinks its revision is 1.03

It probably is not the firmware version. The recommended firmware for a BU40N is 1.03 MK, which is what your drive was showing. Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide

Most likely the disc is dirty or has an almost invisible film on it that's making it hard for the laser to pick it up. Less likely but possible is the laser pickup itself might be dirty.

Triple layer, 100GB discs can are the hardest to read.

After trying to clean the disc multiple times I finally decided to try and clean the laser on the disc drive and that seemed to work. I had thought about it, but finally decided to do it after I tried to load it on my friends ps5 where it successfully read the disc. So end result is to also try and clean the laser :D

I'm having a similar issue. After flashing drive to lg bu40n 1.03 its ripping dvd and blu ray with any region code just fine, however it won't even detect on the os or in mkv a 4k disc. Tried DE_LG_WP50NB40-NB50_1.03_MK as well. Tried cleaning the disc, hesitant to clean lens since its new drive. Tried Total Recall 4k and The Martian 4k. Wondering if it could be the enclosure, drive, or not quite the right firmware. Any advice is appreciated, first attempt at backing up collection.

I'm using an OWC Slim Optical Drive Enclosure with usb 3.0 type A connection with HLDS BU40N Ultra Slim 9.5mm UHD 4K Blu-ray SATA 3.0 GB/s Optical Drive for PC.

Drive Information
OS device name: \Device\CdRom0
Current profile: BD-ROM
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE WP50NB40
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: ...
Firmware date: 2120-05-07 09:29
Bus encryption flags: 17
Highest AACS version: 76

The WP50NB40 or BP50NB40 firmware is not UHD capable.

The drive came packaged as BU40N (AFIK100) ROM VER. 1.02. I tried flashing it to DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK.bin. Which changed it to Libredrive enabled but when it couldn't rip 4k I started testing other firmware. Guess I breezed right over the mention that BP50NB40 NB50/52, NB72 is not supported UHD. It still rips everything else fine so not disappointed just might gift to a friend when I try again for something that can handle the 4k. I appreciate all the tools and information!

Put the BU40N firmware back on it.

I don't understand why when you can't rip a disc, people automatically think it's the firmware?? This is just crazy!! The firmware is generally the last thing it would be. The most common issue is the disc needs cleaning (or replacing as UHD discs aren't the best quality) or the drive lasers need cleaning.
