Problem ripping UHD w/LG with *new* LG drive..

Post by CrazyRipper »

I recently purchased a new internal LG WH14NS40 SATA drive, connecting it to my laptop via an externally powered UGREEN SATA to IDE adapter. I immediately flahsed it up to WH16NS60 with no problems whatsoever, then proceeded to rip two known-good regular BluRays with no problem whatsoever. All good, right?

Welp...not so fast.

Now, when attempting to rip 4K BluRays, the device gets *very* cranky and *very* slow - often times simply refusing to read the disc at all. IT won't even generate a log past initial startup, just making all kinds of scary noises and sitting there forever.

Perhaps *one* try out of, maybe (?) four (i've tried several permutations so can't say exacty how many different times I've tried) - it will *slllooowwlly* get to the "Processing PLaylists.../Opening BluRay Disc" phase but the progress bars will stay stuck at each stage nearly interminably.

I've really *never* had to post here because my process following all the tips here has historically been flawless over the years, but this one kinda has me scratching my head. I did *not* see the UGREEN SATA-IDE adapter on the "Do not use" list but I can't help wondering if there is something peculiar is going on specific to 4k discs on that adapter.

The best success I've had so far is it getting to the "Decrypting" section but taking *several MINUTES* to get through it - but eventually it just gives up.

I'm kind of at a loss. What, if anything, sould I try next?

Does your adapter have a power supply or is it just USB? If yes, that's the issue. Too less power for a full size drive. I can recommend the Benfei with the power adapter.

Thanks for the reply and the advice.

The UGREEN adapter I'm using is externally powered. However, because I had success with the regular BR but not the 4K BR, it made me at least *suspect* the idea that the 4K discs were drawing more power than the UGREEN supply was giving. It is rated for 1.5A at 12 V, so I swapped it out for an external power supply rated for 3.0A at 12V.

That made all the difference in the world. After i did that, I was able to at least get past the initial read/decrypt of the disc, only to see it fail about halfway through - BUT those were on discs I am suspicious of having irreparable surface defects.

But I *definitely* think the PSU was the culprit. 1.5A was find for regular BR, but not for 4K.

I'm going to test on one other 4K UHD BR that I suspect may have fatal physical flaws and if I can at least get back to my "expected failure" trying to rip on a different drive, that should essentially confirm my suspicions.

Thanks again..will post an update with later testing.

Another bit of information that leads me to conclude the 1.5A supply with the UGREEN adapter was the culprit, I *failed* to rip one 4K disc on two different drives, but when I changed the power supply on the new one, the errors returned for that disc on each device started matching.

For a final test, I put that disc in an actual 4K player and it has all *kinds* of skips and stalls, so I think it is basically damaged beyond recovery at this point.

As a last resort. Wash the disc with liquid soap and warm water. Dry with a paper towel. Wipe with a microfiber cloth. Try again.

Pioneer drives are the better readers and have a better error correction.

Definitely already tried washing it as suggested with no improvement. Shame on me for not taking better care of it.

The disc in question is unwatchable on a regular player so physical defects are undoubtedly the issue.

I still might pick up a Pioneer drive as a last backup . I'll have to go back to the drive thread to remember which model is the preferred one as the last time I checked they were hard or impossible to find.

I know the LG doesn't have the best reputation, but it was only $50 so if I can get a few 4K rips off new/good discs that'll be good.

A standalone player just skips critical regions. So you will not have any luck with a Pioneer drive.

I guess I'm a tad confused; I thought you suggested getting a Pioneer because it has better error correction, but then said I wouldn't have any better luck with a Pioneer drive?

I'm sure I'm misunderstanding something, so forgive the confusion. I realize no reader is going to fix the obvious scratches on this one 4K movie I was discussing.

Normally a Pioneer drive will have a far greater chance of reading a disc but no drive will help you if the disc has scratches that bad that cause a standalone player to skip and jump and as you said is unwatchable.
Cheers :D

You can work cautious with toothpaste and sand the disc with it. From the inner to the outer, not in circles. Use it on the single scratches, not on the complete disc at all.
After this wash the disc also with liquid soap and warm water. Dry with a paper towel. Wipe with a microfiber cloth.

Perhaps you can sand a scratch on a micrometer level so, that the laser hits at a different angle and can read the data. I've had success with some discs with this.
