Good day,
I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with my installation of Makemkv. I have the latest version with the beta key installed, and the app launches just fine, and sees my drive. When I insert a disc in, the drive spins up, and eventually tells me No Disc. I tried 4 different discs, and I had exactly the same error. The drive is an external drive connected by USB-C, and is a BU40N FW 1.03. The drive works fine on my Mac.
No disc error on Fedora Workstation 41
Re: No disc error on Fedora Workstation 41
Update:
I swapped to a different external drive (was HL-DT-ST BD-RE BU40N 1.03, is now Pioneer BD-RW BDR-UD04 1.14). Both drives work on MacOS X. Only the Pioneer works on Linux. I can now use both drives simultaneously, but I'm just curious why the BD-RE BU40N doesn't work on Linux. It does show up, but when it tries to read a disc, it spins up, and ultimately always errors out with No DIsc.
I uninstalled MakeMKV and reinstalled. Not sure what else I can try.

It sounds like the drive is not getting enough power. Can you use an external power supply to test it?tamorgen wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2025 5:20 pmUpdate:

Re: No disc error on Fedora Workstation 41
No, there isn't a port to supply power other than the USB-B input. I've seen other references online of others having issues with this drive on Linux. It's plugged into a USB-C port, the same as when it's plugged in on my Mac, so USB-C provides enough power. When I plug the Pioneer drive into the the same port on my Linux computer, it works just fine, also USB-C, no external power.
Re: No disc error on Fedora Workstation 41
Just because the Mac is supplying enough power via USB-C does not mean that the PC is. It would be worth it to just try to power the drive. And one drive working and the other not working may be that the working drive draws less power.
But if you are seeing other people having the same issue with the same drive on Linux then there probably isn't much you can do about it.

Re: No disc error on Fedora Workstation 41
Agreed, but I don't see any indication that it's a power issue. The drive spins up just fine. It initially does see the disc, just when you hit the button to decrypt, it comes up as No Disc after spinning for a a little bit.
Unfortunately, not possible. There is no input just for power. Most of the time, from what I've seen, when people have power issues, they are plugging the drive into a USB 3 port. USB C doesn't seem to have the issue. I tried looking for the power specs on both drives, but I havent' been able to find them. These are both external, slimline drives so they're meant to be used without an external power supply. Ironically, the Verbatim/Pioneer drive has a power input available, but doesn't need it.
If I had to guess at this point, it's something about the kernel I'm running.
