Issue with rippings dvds using two instances of makemkv simultaneously

Post by dvdtuber »

I've been ripping parts of my DVD collection which mostly consists of region 1 and 2 dvd's with two drives using makemkv. One of the drives is a region free bluray drive, the other is a region locked dvd drive set at region 1. When I use two instances of makemkv in single drive mode simultaneously I have experienced messages of

"Region setting of drive...does not match the region of currently inserted disc, trying to work around..."

and delays in ripping even on the region free drive and even for region 1 dvds which both should handle without any delays or such messages. It doesn't happen every time but that has left me stumped with what the reason is behind it happening.

The strange thing is that if I re-try the dvd without having the other drive ripping a dvd the messages and delays don't occur. Is this expected behavior when using two instances of makemkv simultaneously?

I tried searching for similar topics but the closest I found is this post of someone using two drives simultaneously who is getting "drive not matching region"-messages on two region 1 locked drives with region 1 dvds but unfortunately isn't certain about it. But they also do not experience it consistently.
Just curious as to what might be going on. As far as I can recall, I've never set the region code on either driver and they are both set to U.S., but I might be wrong about that. It's just never been a problem in ripping discs of any region. Sometimes I get that message, sometimes I don't. These discs should be Region 1.

Is this expected behavior ...
Try starting both instances then in each instance check Preferences -> IO -> "Ask for single drive mode".

This behavior occurs while I've enabled "Ask for single drive mode" as the default and I have chosen a different drive for both makemkv instances.

Some additional information that might be of importance but didn't mention before is that the Bluray drive is using LibreDrive mode while the other drive is not.

LibreDrive enabled drives should be able to ignore region coding without issue. Non-LibreDrive enabled drives may or may not work.

That's the strange thing here. When I use only one of the drives everything works as expected. The Bluray region-free LibreDrive enabled drive ignores any region coding while the DVD region-locked drive only complains about region settings not matching the region of the disc when they differ.

However when trying to use both drives concurrently with makemkv using the single-drive mode I occasionally get the formentioned warnings for both drives including the delays associated with it. While I haven't measured it I believe it happens seldom enough for it to still be worth it to use two drives but it cuts into the advantage quite a bit. If I had another LibreDrive or non-LibreDrive I could test whether it occurs due to both not being of the same type. In lieu of that I was hoping to determine whether there is something with my hardware setup that is out of the ordinary compared to those who experience no issues using multiple drives.
