LG WH16NS60 drive issue

#1 Post by mikey1273 » Fri Feb 21, 2025 10:14 pm

I started to have this issue last evening with my drive. I was Ripping a Blu-ray Box set of Dr Who - The Jodi Whitacker years. I got all the way through to the last 2 special features Discs and now I can't get it to read the discs. I even went back and tried a disc I ripped already and it won't load that disc after I close the tray. it will spin a while and then MakeMKV says there is no disc. I have tried an audio CD and EasyAudo converter picked that up in the drive and could read it. I tried a DVD with Make MKV and it seemed to read that fine. Ive tried to restart the computer a few times too, no dice reading Blu-rays. What if anything can I do to get it to work again? Thank for any help.

I've tried some canned air to see if it could be dust on the laser lens hoping to get lucky. Well no luck there. This is what MakeMKV shows after it tries to load a BD disc.

I came across this page and think this is what my problem likely is.... The violet wave length laser my have died.

So now it looks like I have to see about replacement options. Is the LG WH14NS40 capable of reading 4k discs like the WH14NS60 was? I see it is available on amazon for about $60.

Most likely the blue laser is dead and the red still works. LG drives don't last long.

Can you recommend a better replacement Drive? Seems you posted that as I wrote my edit.
My preference would be an internal SATA drive but external USB 3.0 is something I might consider.

The Asus is a rebadged LG. Go with the Pioneer.

Get a Vinpower 212V full size internal or a Verbatim external. Both need to be flashed. Post again and I will send a flasher. Very easy.

I got the Pioneer Drive a bit ago and got it installed. Testing it out now so far reading CD, DVD and BD discs right out of the box. I have immediately noticed this drive is much quieter than the LG. I can barely hear it running. Probably will try to flash it tomorrow. Very pleased so far.

I ordered the same drive (eBay listing, but same seller) and just installed it. @Coopervid, could I get help with flashing too?

I just ordered the same drive. I should get it March 3-6. I used the kit purchased from @Billycar11 to upgrade my LG WH16NS40 and it worked great for a couple of days ripping multiple BR and a few 4K disks. Now it won't read any disks at all even after a shutdown and restart. I do not blame Billy at all just the cheap LG drive.

Hopefully this one will last a little longer when I get it.
