Sorry I've read your model wrong. Of course is the BH16NS40 with NS51 flashable.

You don't need a firmware backup. With the original LG firmware auto updater you can get your drive back to 1.05.

then flashed HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin and ... bamm, I have an UHD friendly drive!

although now I recognized makemkv is shareware only and its price is quite high so not sure what to do now... (not that devs do not deserve all the money! they do). I only have a single UHD disc (any many BD and DVD), but wanted something "futureproof"......

In this ASUS works a LG drive, ASUS is "only" a OEM manufacturer, so you can flash the WH16NS60 1.02MK without problems.

Howdy. I'm running Linux and I have a HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH14NS40, SVC CODE of NS50 running firmware version 1.05. I understand from the first page post this is an encrypted firmware so I need to run 'makemkvcon' with the 'enc' option. However, I'm confused what firmware I should be installing on it to be able to read UHD discs. I've tried unsuccessfully to flash it with HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_WH16NS60-1.02-NM00100-211810291936.bin. When I run the makemkvcon command, it just sits there and does nothing.

My thoughts in the past were what costs a full MakeMKV license to watch my 4k discs on my PC supported "home cinema" and what will cost an UHD player completely with a new digital sound system to change it with my analogue one 7.1 THX.

Only 60 €, in my case, were more than future proof.

BD (and DVD) ripping is all part of the software. The licence isn't just for UHDs it's for all 3 formats.

Hi guys, I just got the Buffalo Japanese drive "BRUHD-PU3" (external) but I don't know which tool or firmware to use to read UHD blu-ray discs.

Do I use the flasher on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22896 or something else entirely?

I saw that "MartyMcNuts" said to use "1. HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-BU12-OM01001-211902230922.bin
2. DE_Buffalo_BRUHD-PU3_BU10 OR DE_LG_BU40N_1.00", so any of these three firmwares work?

Thanks for posting all of this. I had some issues understanding the instructions with makeMKV in a snap on Ubuntu, so I ran the GUI on Windows and it was a breeze for an "archgon Premium Aluminum External USB 3.0 UHD 4K Blu-Ray Writer Super Drive for PC and Mac" that identifies as BD-RE BU40N.

I don't think your drive is properly flashed. If it was, for Status it would say 'Enabled'.

I appreciate your quick replies and help. I tried refreshing multiple times. Each time it says the flash is successful but the Status hasn't changed to enable. Below is what the terminal output looks like (This is on a Mac mini M2). I followed the Mac flashing command instructions under the "How To Flash Videos and commands:" section on this guide.

Do I need to revert back to the original firmware (not sure where to get the from) before attempting to flash back?
