Some details:

• Used and new drives: HLDS/LG BU40N, Pioneer BDR-UD03. These are slimline drives and not full-height.

• All drives are pre-flashed for 4K/UHD with LibreDrive and ready to use out of the box!

• All drives, used and new, are tested thoroughly. Backup (UHD, BD, DVD, CD) and burning (BD-RE DL, DVD+RW, CD-RW) will be tested and documented.

• New drives will be Verbatim 43888, Verbatim 43890, and Buffalo MediaStation BRXL-PUS6U3. They will ship in their original boxes with all accessories and opened only for flashing and testing. (Note: Beware of any included software updates that come with the drive and may attempt to "upgrade" the firmware if run. Don't do it!)

• All drives will ship from within the USA. No tariff payments needed!

The fine print:

• Shipping will be to addresses in the USA ONLY. Sorry, I am not able to ship internationally. The drive will be shipped using USPS Ground Advantage that includes tracking and insurance. It should take 5-7 days to reach you.

• Unfortunately, I am unable to provide post-sale support. This is a limited time gig for me, with a limited supply of drives. Many of your issues might already be solved through the forums or Reddit. Any support requests will be referred back to this policy.

• Because this is a product that has been modified from original, there are no refunds or exchanges. All sales are final. Any refund or exchange requests will be referred back to this policy.

• Prices and quantities will be updated without notice. I regret that I am unable to consider any requests for price negotiations or discounts on purchasing multiple drives.

• The drive will be shipped out soon after complete payment in full is received. While I try my best to ship out as soon as possible (even same day in some cases), please allow up to 3 business days for it to be shipped out depending on various circumstances.

It was in the mail the day I paid and made it to me in a few days through the USPS. It looks great in a nice slim case and works with MakeMKV, right out of the box, to backup my movies, so it made setup dead simple.

The only trouble I had with it wasn't really the drive's fault. It cranked through 4 discs smoothly and then it wouldn't recognize a 5th, but when I pulled out the troublesome disc, it had greasy fingerprint smeared across it. Wiping it clean and sticking it back in got things right back to working smoothly. For anyone else ordering a drive, check your discs for smears, haze, or scratches if they aren't working. There are some repair kits you can order out there for damaged discs, but I don't have any recommendations on that front.

Overall, I am extremely happy to be able to start backing up physical collection of blu-rays and this helped me do that with confidence and speed.

Generally, when I find oily smudges and fingerprints, I take the disc and turn on the faucet with a little trickle of water, and then I use a simple liquid soap or dishwashing liquid that washes clean like Method or Dawn (avoid bar soap or any liquid soap with moisturizers), and gently just use my thumb to wash the disc, going straight from hub to edge and back, never in circles (like buffing) and never around the disc. Then to finish washing I go full blast on the faucet for a bit to get the remaining soap off, and then to dry it, I use a small microfiber cloth (I recommend avoiding using paper towels and large microfiber cloths with the bigger bristles as I've found both tend to leave a lot of lint), following the same hub to edge motion. Unless there is some kind of scratch that the drive doesn't like, for me, that has always fixed the problem with discs that have some fingerprints, oil, sheen, or dust!

I had unrelated trouble with USPS delivering the package, it went back and forth a couple of times, but that was not OP's fault. He did keep in touch with me as I awaited delivery though.

I have backed up a few of my Blu-rays and UHD Blu-Rays so far, and it's perfect.
I have no issue recommending these repurposed drives, especially for those searching for a drive to back up their 4K UHD Blu-rays.

Dealing with Larry and the dvd drive have been fantastic! He was super responsive and transparent. I know it seems like your just sending some guy money to get a drive but the mkv blogs are a community and guys like Larry are trustworthy if the community verifies. Notes on the drive:

Pros
- works perfectly right out the box
- blu ray rips have been perfect
- I didn’t need it, but the cable provided had a splitter that allow you to have external power if your computer doesn’t provide it through USB
- price can’t be beat!

Cons
- loudish lol. I had been using an apple superdrive so this may be an unfair comparison. I think it’s a relatively normal volume for most ripping drives I think. The SuperDrive is just aluminum and very quiet. Definitely not a big deal but just wanted my Mac users to be aware.

Larry
- packaging was excellent
- communication was excellent
- used PayPal
- sent same day and sent me tracking info

Again, can’t say enough good things about him and the drive. Thanks Larry!

(Small note: The customer mentions "dvd drive" but the BU40N is a UHD-official Blu-Ray drive. Yes, it also backs up DVDs!)

Additional information/FAQ:

• How do I use the USB Y-cable?

  The included Y-cable has two USB-A plugs (1, 3) and a mini USB plug (2).
  
  Plug (1) into the USB port on your computer first. (1) must always be plugged into the computer because it has power + data lines. Then plug (2) into the drive.
  
  You will notice an additional thinner cable coming out of (1) that leads to (3). (3) is for additional power in case your USB port does not provide adequate power to the drive. Symptoms of this would become apparent when the drive spins up to full speed and suddenly dies, or if there are frequent unexplained disconnections and reconnections.
  
  In the case that you need additional power, you can plug (3) into another USB port on your computer or an external USB power brick that outputs 5 V. For my own personal setup, I have a powered USB hub and have both of the plugs plugged in at all times.
• Why should I buy from you? / Why should I buy a used drive?
  
  I've gone through the "hard work" of coming up with this solution and testing it, which is comprised of work involving purchasing the different components, hardware, and software. I've saved customers the time and trouble and especially guesswork of figuring out the best way to go about this whole process.
  
  In addition, I believe in sustainability. These used drives are still good and could use a home. I have reused packing material and made the box as small as possible in an effort to reduce waste.
  
  Before I sell a drive, I physically clean it and test them thoroughly with all media types (Blu-Ray, DVD, CD). Some of these drives were quite dirty, so it seems that they weren't used very often. However, I have found some that did not pass my testing. My supplier does not accept returns, so if I encounter a failing drive, I have no choice but to absorb the cost -- a complete cost that you'd be out of if you were to go at it alone and received a faulty drive.
  
  Lastly, I've seen older drives last a really long time and newer drives fail early. There is unfortunately no way to tell how long a drive will last, but considering the fact that manufacturers are trying to lock newer drives down to prevent LibreDrive, older drives might actually be better suited for backing up your media.
• Are you able to provide discounts for multiple drives?
  
  While I enjoy this process and I like to help others, because margins are already slim (remember that I include shipping in the cost!), combined with the fact that I absorb any costs arising from drives that don't meet my standards, I regret that I am unable to accommodate any discounts on multiple unit orders.
• The drive seems slow in its USB 2.0 enclosure. Would a USB 3.0 enclosure be any better?
  
  Short answer: no.
  
  Long answer: Before I decided to sell these drives in these enclosures, I tested the performance using the USB 2.0 enclosure I chose for the solution versus a USB 3.0 enclosure. The results were identical.
  
  The specifications for the BU40N listed on LG's website say that it reads up to 8x for DVD's and 6x for BD's max. I have had zero issues reaching the max speeds of 8x for DVD's and 6x for BD's.
  
  In my testing, MakeMKV reports that the max speed of ripping BD's at 6.0x (25.9 MB/s), which is in line with the BU40N specifications. I also see DVD's being ripped at 8.7x (11.5 MB/s), better than the 8x in the drive's listed specifications. BD's ripping at 6.0x would be the limit of the drive and the most bandwidth needed through its USB interface. The USB 2.0 specification allows for a maximum possible throughput of 480 Mb/s or 60 MB/s, which is much more than the 6.0x read rate of the drive when reading a BD. Therefore, there is no issue with the throughput of the drive even though it is USB 2.0.
  
  If you believe your drive is "slow" or should be ripping media faster than what MakeMKV reports, then either the drive does not like your disc for some reason, or your computer needs to be updated (either a driver update or your hardware can't handle the drive for whatever reason).

I received the Grade A BU40N in metal enclosure today. All is well and I can read UHD discs without issue and rip at faster speeds. Thank you to OP for stellar work in researching this and doing all the testing + providing competitive prices and helping us preserve our precious collections.

I received the drive I ordered yesterday on January 13th, it arrived very quickly and the customer service was absolutely amazing, gave me updates and even though Larhaus had a family emergency start in the middle of the process he still pulled through and had the drive sent out very quickly. Once the drive arrived I pulled the dead one out of my laptop and upon just feeling the weight difference while holding both, the one that I had that had died within a month of getting it was either an absolute fake and not genuine LG-BU40N or it was just extremely used. The one I got from Larhaus was manufactured in late 2019 where as the not genuine or knock-off one from amazon was from March of 2017. I am extremely happy with the drive I purchased and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly it arrived and how well it is working, I would come back to Larhaus 10/10 times if I decide I needed more LG BU40N drives. I have ripped several discs and burned a personal blu-ray copy of the 4K77 project, even though I had to get a BD50 iso down to BD25 size iso it turned out great and the drive burned it, verified it with 0 errors and 0 misalignments. The Drive is 100% the best purchase I've made in recent days.
