Eastbound & Down - S1D1

#1 Post by zenosparadox » Fri Nov 04, 2011 2:26 am

I don't have the disk anymore, nor do I have the debug information, but even though MakeMKV reported no errors when making MKVs from this disk, the files have some problems. I cannot one of the titles through mkvmerge, and another title is reporting a muxing time of 107 minutes (5.18GB file, 1080p). That's far too long. So, something is wrong with these files somehow.

Please run mkvalidator and mediainfo on these files, and see if any problems are present.

Here's what it says in MediaInfo:

Unique ID : 278851744934344394807362124342302065014 (0xD1C8E47EE6DFA0E22016F4F7C9EBC176)
Complete name : E:\Video\TV\Eastbound & Down\101. Chapter 1.mkv
Format : Matroska
Format version : Version 2
File size : 6.18 GiB
Duration : 37mn 9s
Overall bit rate : 23.8 Mbps
Encoded date : UTC 2011-11-01 23:11:56
Writing application : MakeMKV v1.6.16 win(x64-release)
Writing library : libmakemkv v1.6.16 (1.2.0/1.1.0) win(x64-release)

The file duration should actually be around 29:44 or so. I cannot clip off this dead space at the end of the file. mkvmerge says:

"Error: 'E:\Video\TV\Eastbound & Down\101. Chapter 1.mkv' track 5: Could not find valid DTS headers in this track's first frames."

I have attached the length error text generated by mkvalidator.

So, I found where the error occurs with mkvmerge. There are 4 audio tracks, and the last one is the culprit. When I cut him out of the mkvmerge process, everything works fine. So, there must have been something wrong about what MakeMKV did with that track, or that track was mastered poorly.

Here's what MediaInfo says about that track:

ID : 5
Format : DTS
Format/Info : Digital Theater Systems
Format profile : Express
Codec ID : A_DTS
Duration : 37mn 9s
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 192 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel positions : Front: L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth : 24 bits
Compression mode : Lossy
Stream size : 51.0 MiB (1%)
Title : Express
Language : English

What is this DTS "Express"?? I'm pretty sure this is the commentary track for this episode.

Hi!

For some insight regarding DTS Express, go to:
http://www.dts.com/Professionals/Techno ... rview.aspx

It is most often used for "PIP" (Picture In Picture) audio on Blu-ray discs. A "lightweight", flexible sub-type of DTS audio...

Very few programs can handle DTS express correctly. I'm not aware of any open-source app that can decode such tracks.
