Error with BluRay Disk: "TimecodeDelay"

Hi all,

I tried out the 1.4.7beta of MakeMKV, on a Windows Vista 32bit system, against a Bluray ("Black Hawk Down", thai is).
First of all, the app doesn't recognize my BluRay-burner (external one, connected by USB) -I understand that there is an AHCI problem, but am surprised to see it applying to USB-connected external drives as well:

So far, so good. I end up with 8 titles; 7 out of these I can convert into MKVs and they play as they should afterwards.

The 8th one however is the main movie with 35,5GB and 15 chapters. This one ends with a "TimecodeDelay >= int16(0x8000) && TimecodeDelay <= int16(0x7FFF)" -anyone a clue on that?

Just for the records, I have to quote myself here and add upon this: I gave it another try with v1.52beta -and now it worked. So: Whatever you changed: Thanks, it does its job now!

If you want gui: Pick one of the many [free] gui's featured here: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=78
handbrake is also popular: http://handbrake.fr/
otherwise make an avisynth script and feed directly to x264

Just do note that all the gui's are simply frontends to x264/ffmpeg (ie they dont do anything magical the encoder is x264 regardless of the gui you choose )

While I agree with the "They don't do anything magical", The gui's do tend to allow you to add in filtering, resizing and a few other odds and ends that the straight x265 encoder Just can't give you. now the guis for ffmpeg, those can be questionable. As ffmpeg can itself do some filtering,resizing,etc. But it doesn't support batching jobs.

First, look at what you have in your MKV, Does it have an HD Audio stream in it (TrueHD,Dolby,etc). From these you way want to conver them to there non HD version. But this depends alot on what you have for an audio system. Way to often I find people saving the complete DTS, AC3 or worse yet HD audio stream. When they only intend to play the movie using only a 2.1 or less setup. Downgrade the audio to fit your system/setup.

Second, 35 gigs to 8gigs. While it'll still look good is going to lose ALOT of definition. Regardless of what you use to encode it. The Closest/best compress to definition your going to get it a 2 to 1 (or half the size). And that is only going to be if the Bluray had a mpeg2 video stream. Now this is not to say you can't get alot better then 2 to 1 (or 1/2 the size) of the org, But you are going to lose definition quickly. Remember in "most" cases the video is already "highly" compress into a h264 (or vc-1,etc) stream already. So your only option is to lose the definition. Think of it like re-compressing a compressed file or "zip'ing" a zip file. But in this case re-compressing requires the loss of data compared to compressing a file with 7zip,winrar,etc.

But heres come thing that can help,
1. Resize down to 720P. This makes the most sense if your TV/Monitor only does 720P anyways.
2. Run it though an editor, remove opening logos/credits and ending credits.

Agreed about the off topic part. But lets looks at some basic math, The average bluray Video Stream Ranged in size from +/- 12 (KungFu Panda) gigs to ~34 gigs. And the Average Mbps for that Video stream is between 20 and 35 Mbps. And the Average DTS audio stream is about 1 to 1.5 gigs. Sure you could use the AC3 stream stream and save a few more MB's (~325 MB savings). But I personally prefer the sound of DTS stream to AC3 stream.

So to make a 8 gigs HD movie file, while retaining the audio stream. That leaves you with space for a 7 gig Video stream. And to maintain the 1080P in that limited size your going only be able to do a MAX of about ~3500 Kbps (again thats Kbps, not Mbps). But thats not to good as a standard DVD has about ~4700 Kbps for a heavy action movie. But lets say you where willing to downgrade to ~720P (the ~ is because 720 with good cropping comes in under 720). Then you'd have just enough room for about ~6000 Kbps.

Now with the DVD you'll note the Kbps dropped down to about 1/2 of the DVD to 2194. So if you can only aford to have a video stream with about ~3000 Kbps. Your really gaining any thing verses just using the standard DVD.
