Problem with new LG BH16NS55SO

#1 Post by jmrrsa » Sun Nov 17, 2024 3:57 pm

Hello
I am new to the forum and would be grateful for some assistance with a problem that may be due to my mistakes.
I read up a lot on drives for ripping UHD Blu-Ray discs and the only drive that was recoemmended in this forum which I had access to locally in SOuth Africa was the LG BH16NS55SO. My existing drive was the LG BH16NS40 which I tested and found that this could not be used to convert to UHD ripping.
I installed the new drive in my Win 11 desktop and the drive read normally and could be found by MakeMKV - FW was 105 ex factory. I stupidly did not try to open the drive tray before I fiddled with the SDFlasher.
I could not find the bin file BH16NS55-1.05-NM00400-212004211049.bin for the initial flash as suggested by this post https://goughlui.com/2024/10/28/experim ... -bh16ns55/

I thus decided to try to flash directly to BP60N10 using this bin file HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BP60NB10-1.02-NM00800-212005070935.
The SDFlasher was able flash the drive successfully and this showed in MakeMKV with the new FW.

At this stage I decided to try to install a UHD disc to see if the rip would work and found that the drive tray was not responding to the open button even though it was seen by my PC. I shut down, disconnected the drive and rebooted a few times without success.

I tried to find a solution to this and saw a post about completing the process by flashing to HL-DT-ST-BD-RE_BU40N-1.03-NM00000-211810241934 but I think this was a mistake... It flashed successfully but the drive tray does still not open and now I cannot revert back to BP60NB10-1.02-NM00800-212005070935.
When I try to flash with the BP60N I get error message 0xff05c103.

I have tried the RECOVER Drive function selecting the BP60N bin file and it says it was successful but MakeMKV still shows that the product is BD-RE BU40N and not the original BH or flashed BP file.

The drive remains unresponsive when trying to open it and is thus not working. I have opended the tray using a paper clip and the blue flashiong light comes on with the tray open but disappears when I close it.

Here is the current info as per MakeMKV:

Drive Information
OS device name: G:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.03
Serial number: [redacted]
Firmware date: 2118-10-24 19:34
Bus encryption flags: 17

LibreDrive Information
Status: Enabled
Drive platform: MT1959
Firmware type: Patched (microcode access re-enabled)
Firmware version: 1.03
DVD all regions: Yes
BD raw data read: Yes
BD raw metadata read: Yes
Unrestricted read speed: Yes

No disc inserted

I subsequently found the bin file I should have used to start with in All You Need Firmware Pack (MartyMcNuts) which is DE_LG_BH16NS55_1.02 but I cannot flash with it gettung the error code 0xff05c103 again.

Please advise as to whether there is any way to recover this drive and make it usable again or if it is not salvageable. If it can be recovered please advise which bin files I should be using and where can I find them.
Any advice wouldd be much appreciated.
thanks and regards
Jose

The problem is, I think, that you've flashed a slim drive firmware like BP60 or BU40N to a regular internal drive.

The WH16NS60 MK 1.02 is the recommended one.

How to get the drive back to regular function, I don't know.

Should have used official guide see below and try the recovery section
Buy a UHD drive from the guide and how to video maker: https://www.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic ... 20&t=17831

Thanks, you are correct that I messed up and chose the wrong file...
It is now stuck on the slim drive firmware BU40N and I cannot revert back to the correct internal frive FW. I have tried to reflash/repair multiple times with no success and the drive drawer still does not open.
Unless there are any suggestions from anyone, I suspect that the drive is basically unusable

Check the solution from Billycar11 (his 2nd signature link)

With DOS Flash you could rescue the drive.

Many thanks for the suggestion.
Is this the section you are referring to?

New Updated guide for all Drives and firmware including encrypted firmware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyQV1aPlbow
1. Open cmd as admin

2. Navigate to makemkvs install directory by default on 64 bit systems it is here: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV"

3. If you have a listed encrypted firmware you must use this command: makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d “ your drive letter here Example: D”: rawflash enc -i “path to your firmware Example: C:\Users\Billy\Downloads\Downgrade-Enabled-Firmware\Auto-Flash\LG-Desktop-NS60-sleep-fix\WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin”

4. If you have unencrypted firmware use this command: makemkvcon64.exe f --all-yes -d “ your drive letter here Example: D”: rawflash -i “path to your firmware Example: C:\Users\Billy\Downloads\Downgrade-Enabled-Firmware\Auto-Flash\LG-Desktop-NS60-sleep-fix\WH16NS60-1.02-MK.bin”

5. Remove my examples and quotes ”” when you run the commands

My drive is now showing as a BU40N. The drive was the BH16NS55 before I messed it up.
When I run the DOS command, which firmware should I select - the WH16NS60 or another?

Forget it. You haven't read in detail. You need to do the DOSFlash procedure with the firmware that was posted there. If successful you can take further flashing steps w/o DOSFlash. Good luck.

Please try using the recovery method with SDFtool Flasher.

1. Select your drive.
2. Select RECOVERY.
3. In the popup window, select the current (wrong) firmware on the drive (in your case, whichever version of BU40N you flashed).
4. In the firmware dropdown box, select WH16NS60 1.02-MK firmware.
5. Click START and wait until completed.
Cheers :D

Thanks Marty, appreciate your clear instructions.
I have tried the steps you advised.
My drive shows the following after I mistakenly cross-flashed to an external drive - BU40N

Drive Information
OS device name: G:
Manufacturer: HL-DT-ST
Product: BD-RE BU40N
Revision: 1.05
Serial number: KLZO1JB2512
Firmware date: 2124-04-23 13:47
Bus encryption flags: 17

LibreDrive Information
Status: Possible, not yet enabled
Drive platform: MT1959

I have used the recovery steps you instructed exactly - the only choice I have in your bin files for the BU40N are DE_LG_BU40N_1.00 and DE_LG_BU40N_1.03_MK. There is no 1.05 version to choose from. When I use either of these for the recovery process it runs successfully but the drive still subsequently shows as BU40N Rev 1.05. I cannot seem to change the Rev 1.05 to anything else.
When I try to flash the Rev 1.05 to either BU40N 1.00.bin or 1.03_MK.bin I get the error code 0xff05c103

As I understand it, my drive firmware is stuck on Rev 1.05 and I cannot change this with the SDFtool Flasher v1.3.5 no matter what I try.

My PC is a Win 11 64 bit. I don't have access to a 32 bit Windows PC in case there is an option for another way of doing this.

Is there anything you can suggest to change the BU40N FW from Rev 1.05 to something else?

thanks and regards
Jose

you are digging the hole deeper the last time you showed you it was on 1.03 martys instructions would have worked for that but you went and downloaded the official LG 1.05 bu40n updater
so now you need to downgrade to BU40N 1.03MK with enc first then do what marty said

Thanks Billy, you are correct that I did try the official LG BU40N encoder in my futile attempt to salvage this and can see that I have made it worse..

I apologise for my ignorance but how do I downgrade to BU40N 1.03MK with enc? I don's see this as an option in SDFtool Flasher. Do I need to use a different technique?

thanks

Just flash 1.03 with SDFTool and have "enc" checked. That's it. If successful then the next step is the recovery function with SDFTool.

It is selected. The green check mark at "Encrypted firmware". You have no idea what you were doing and should't have it done the first place.
