Version too old but is latest

Post by dyoung »

I downloaded & installed MakeMKV on 10/16, registered the free license, then used it briefly and it worked well.
I saw then the free license was valid until (I think) 10/31, so I was not surprised when I opened MakeMKV on 11/2 and it complained of the license.

I went to the forum, got the new license, registered it, restarted MakeMKV.
Upon restarting it complained the version was too old and wanted me to update, but I verified in Help > About the version is 1.17.8 which expires 2025/1/24 (82 days, at that time).
I checked the download page and the newest version is also 1.17.8.
I read the post about the issues with 1.17.7 and discs in the drives, so I tried removing the discs despite the problem my MakeMKV is experiencing being different (almost certainly would not hurt and could help).
Restarted MakeMKV, re-registered the free license, re-started MakeMKV, same result of "Version too old".
I downloaded 1.17.8 again, verified the checksum, reinstalled MakeMKV, re-registered free license, restarted MakeMKV, same result of "Version too old".

I was considering purchasing a license because the software worked well in my prior use.
I would guess a paid license would solve the issue, but I also prefer solving issues.
This should be fixed properly if it is some sort of bug instead of merely bypassing the issue for me alone.

I searched the forum for 30 minutes but found no posts regarding "Version too old" which were not solved by updating because the version installed is the latest & valid.

Thoughts?

Usual cause has been something in the drive when MakeMKV is started, so it never gets to reading the key you enter for the freebie version.

Guessing you read the title but skipped the content because, as you said, the "usual" fix?

I specifically mentioned that.
"I read the post about the issues with 1.17.7 and discs in the drives, so I tried removing the discs"
Sadly, as I said in my initial post, it changed nothing.

Any other thoughts, or should this be submitted as a bug?

No bug. Sure, you really downloaded v1.17.8? In my Ghostery the dowload failed. So I temporarly installed Firefox (v132.0.1), did NOT import anything, initialized the downloaded makeMKV WITH THIS BRANDNEW FIREFOX -> worked. Then installed the new MakeMKV.

PS: Control the available disk-space, also.

My download did not fail.
I specifically said I confirmed the version in the Help > About, AND redownloaded it, AND verified the checksum of v1.17.8.
But hey, perhaps you are correct and I am somehow stupid.
I posted my a screenshot of my Help > About for you to verify yourself.

Seems possible, yes.

On Linux I can't access the GUi's about screen if the version is too old because a modal form appears forcing exit. I'm not sure if that is simply a difference between platforms or if it's indicative of something.

Run "makemkvcon info" and make sure the version matches. I'm not sure how it installs, but misdirected links can happen.

Clearing out everything Makemkv related in your home directory can't hurt (assuming Makemkv doesn't use the so-called "registry").

Does sound like a good uninstall will get things right, if using Windows use Revo Uninstaller that will get rid of all the extra bits that Windows doesn't get rid off, Once done restart the computer and download MakeMKV again.

I do not claim to be perfect, but I proved it was not me committing a mistake before you bothered responding.
Which makes your exact choice of response here intentionally rude & insulting, especially considering you also chose to not bother as little as acknowledging the proof it was not me. And more than that because of the difference between my post & haribo's.

No bug.
Really? How did you determine that? What did you do to verify? What explanation did you offer to support this claim? None at all, which makes this claim completely worthless, especially when compared to all the steps I performed & explanation I provided.

Yep, as I well-explained all the steps of verification I performed prior to you bothering to respond to try to blame me here, while you provided no proof or explanation of your "No bug" claim.

Considering my download did not fail AND I very clearly explained I verified the checksum of the download, what is your point here? If my download somehow failed OR there was a possibility of it (which is eliminated when I verify the file checksum), I could possibly understand this. But I very clearly explained performing more than enough steps to repeatedly ensure this was not the issue, so your entire statement here is irrelevant.

Vague statement, but I would guess you mean "Ensure you have enough free-space on your storage drive to install the software & store the files it produces"?
If free space to install the software was an issue, the software would fail to install. It would not install & function correctly until the license expires then accept the new license but complain of the installed version being too old, so again this is entirely irrelevant.
For the record, my system SSD on which Windows & most of my programs (including MakeMKV) are installed has more than 400GB free presently. My HDD's have 2.5TB & 4TB free presently.

Your problems with your Linux installation of MakeMKV are not my problems with my Windows installation of MakeMKV. It could be relevant if we both experienced the same issue, which would almost certainly prove it a problem with MakeMKV if it was occurring on Windows & Linux. But our issues are different, and I can access the Help > About option which is what you cannot. At best, you prove MakeMKV is bugged and my issue is probably also a bug with MakeMKV. But you provided no explanation to prove your issue is a bug with MakeMKV instead of your system, so your statement is of no value.

I ran "makemkvcon info", and it reported version 1.17.8. Or must I provide another photo proving that which you shall again not acknowledge?

MakeMKV barely touches Windows' registry, storing 1 key which seems to only store user preferences set in MakeMKV. No version info was in that key. There are some other references in the registry, but simple things like Windows referencing programs in its list of recently used programs.

Based on what? Considering what I explained thus far, it sounds like a "good uninstall" would fix nothing, for multiple reasons.
1- I never once saw any "alternative uninstaller" for Windows fix any problem with a program. However, I definitely saw friends & colleagues & internet people complaining of major problems after using such tools, up to & including borking their Windows install to the point of being unable to boot & needing a reinstall. No thanks. You should only use either Windows' uninstaller or an uninstaller provided by the program you are uninstalling.
2- Download MakeMKV again? Because downloading & installing MakeMKV and it functioning correctly until the license expired at which point I registered the new license which actually took correctly but the reboot complained of the MakeMKV *version* being too old, so I redownloaded & reinstalled the same version which was already installed (because the version did not change or expire so was the same version I downloaded 2 weeks prior) which changed nothing so I verified the checksum.... Yeah, I think I provided more than sufficient explanation for what I did to prove "download MakeMKV again" would fix nothing. And thanks for forcing me to waste my time literally repeating what I already explained which you seemed to fail to comprehend.
3- With all I did & explained, the issue is not with Windows, it is with MakeMKV. If that was true with the 1st install, and the checksum-verified 2nd install, your suggestion would fix nothing but could damage my Windows installation, so no.
