@mike admin New Blu-ray release uses AACS 19?

Post by setarip_old »

@mike admin, @anybody else

Blu-ray AACS is presently up to AACS 25.

Why would a new release use AACS 19?

I was wondering the same thing. Transformers Dark of the Moon comes to mind. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. :shock:

I've got to believe there's some type of volume versus licensing fees formula involving "our friends" at AACS-LA ;>}

When I get a chance, I'm going to check the previous Transformers movies...I have a theory. ;)

Well, my theory was wrong. Revenge of the Fallen is using MKB 14. I thought maybe they reused the same key which has been seen before. This one really is a mystery.

Maybe they realize the complete futility of AACS? :lol: :lol: :lol:

No, in that case they'd have made it without AACS. It costs them a fee to use any AACS encryption on the disc, so, this decision to use an old MKB is very strange at best. Logically, it doesn't make any sense at all.

Perhaps they just wanted to make sure it would work on the majority of blu-ray players. X-Men First Class uses a newer AACS and when it was released Amazon was awash with people complaining it wouldn't play.

Are we sure it was because of the AACS and not the updated BD+? In any case, that's certainly a possibility since they need to update the firmware on players who's keys were revoked in a new MKB.

The fee doesn't appear dependent on the version of AACS used.

Not at all, just theorizing.

As of now, MakeMKV supports up to MKB v26 and v27 is expected to arrive very soon.

@mike admin

It appears you've missed the question I asked as the OP:

Why would a new release use AACS 19?

Please advise.

Mike,

On the off chance that your response was lost with the website crash, I'll repeat my question to you:

Why would a new release use AACS 19, while most are already using AACS 25?

I honestly have no idea. MakeMKV supports AACS up to v26 .
