to the 3D-addicts: how do you playback your 3D-backups? Device, software?

MKV playback, recompression, remuxing, codec packs, players, howtos, etc.

to the 3D-addicts: how do you playback your 3D-backups? Device, software?

Post by shisha0505 »

Hello fellow 3D-enthusiasts,

right now i'm in the process of backing up (full backups with MakeMKV) my 3D-Blurays.
So that i can watch them from USB-drive on my 3D-projector or 3D-TV
Now i'm wondering what alternatives there are for playing back the movies in 3D in original 3D-format = frame packing (not talking of SBS)
I'm looking for a setup that is as convenient and comfortable as possible. I would prefer not to watch the movies by connecting my PC to the projector.
How do you guys play your copied 3Ds back?

many thanks in advance :-)

PS: additional question that might be of concern not only for backups of 3D movies but "normal" 2D Blu-ray backups as well: is it possible to make them show like BluRay disks from a BluRay player? With all the menus etc?

Regarding your additional question: If you want to play them back like a BluRay, with the menus and everything, you need to create a backup of the disc. Don't rip the individual MKV files.

This backup will be in an .iso-Format for DVDs, or in a Directory for BluRay disks, and can be opened using VLC on a desktop. You will then have the option to browse it like it's the optical disc in your drive.

This option is not feasible for streaming servers like Plex, Jellyfin or whatever.

Note that a lot of 3D bluray discs are natively authored with subtitle-depths. Which specific data will go lost if you directly rip to mkv (the subs will be in 2D). If you want to keep these subtitle depths, you have to rip to whole disc instead. After which, it's possible to create a "movie only" BD ISO with tsMuxer. Use the latest nightly builds. Of course you need a player that offers support for 3DBD-ISO and display of subtitle depth.

Thanks for your replies.

i'm aware that ripping to mkv will make me lose the option of treating the backups like a regular physical disk.
That's why i do full backups of my BluRay disks.
Although i know that i'm "wasting" approximately 1/5 of my backup mediums' disk spaces.
But i'm kinda old school in that matter.
I somehow ike to celebrate watching a movie instead of simply clicking "execute".
Besides that I like to keep things complete and in its original state whenever possible.

So I was especially interested in which hardware you use for watching your 3D BluRay Backups.

After having done some research i finally ordered the
"Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus"
https://www.dune-hd.com/products/homati ... d=&lang=de
and will give it a try as soon as it gets delivered.
Together with "CoreElec" it should play 3D (and other BluRay backups) from ISOs and directories as if they where real optical disks.

Yeah having (a) standalone mediaplayer(s) is my way to go too. Good luck with your Dune puchase.

The Dune will be returned.
CoreElec doesn't work as hoped and stated on the CoreElec homepage.
3D playback either stutters or crashes.
Or both altogether.
Also 2D playback stutters with CoreElec although 2D works fine in the Dune's original software.
So IMHO the Dune is fine if you want to use its default system but not recommendable if you plan to use it for CoreElec.
Unfortunately you need CoreElec for 3D playback with the Dune.

Maybe take a look at a Zidoo mediaplayer. My Z9X does play 3D, but it (firmware) is not without issues/flaws, which seem erratic. You may want to take a look at it's elaborate user forums before deciding on purchase.
