Hi
My Pioneer drive (info below, in a Vantec external enclosure, direct USB3 cable, direct PSU) works nicely with MakeMKV generally but I'm trying to rip all of Westworld on UHD and hitting an issue. Oddly one specific disc, Season 2 Disc 1, causes the drive to spin for a moment and then fail outright and disconnect from the PC, which results in a generic USB "device not recognised" error.
It doesn't even get to the point of opening the titles list in MakeMKV, yet Windows recognises the disc and I can browse the file structure of the disc before opening MakeMKV.
Can anyone suggest recommendations?
Unsure if this is specifically the disc, the drive, the enclosure or something else.

Wash the disc with liquid soap and warm water. Dry with a paper towel. Wipe with a microfiber cloth and try again.ragnarkarlsson wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 3:27 pmHi

Re: Drive completely disconnects when reading Westworld S2 D1
The disc was fresh out of a factory sealed box where I was very careful not to touch the read surface, however I went through those basic steps and rebooted my machine with the disc ejected and then tried to load the disc in MakeMKV. Same result.
What that did let me know is that actually when I rebooted the PC the drive remained "offline" (ie not recognised as a USB device) and Windows didn't pick up the device until I physically switched its power off and on again.
Windows still recognised the disc and displayed the files etc before MakeMKV crashed and the USB device ejected unceremoniously.

Return / replace the disc.
Re: Drive completely disconnects when reading Westworld S2 D1
I had a few occurrences of something similar with my American Psycho disc.I had to keep unplugging the SATA power from the back of the drive.
Eventually after retrying literally about 100 times over the course of a few weeks, that one time the drive decided the read the disc ok and ripped it fine. My thinking was that it could be due to tolerances, maybe the disc was too hot or too cold maybe the drive was too hot, a week later, different set of climactic conditions all of a sudden it decides to work.
I presume like a lot of things discs will expand slightly with heat, etc…
I have an LG internal drive btw.

LGs are picky with 3-layer discs. Especially "friendly firmware" like ASUS or BH16NS55. For those discs you should flash to WH16NS60 1.02 that works better. Far better are Pioneer drives.ben_uk wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 12:53 pmI had a few occurrences of something similar with my American Psycho disc.I had to keep unplugging the SATA power from the back of the drive.

Thanks, fortunately the boxset was from Amazon so replacement should be relatively straight forward. Will report back if a second version of the disc has the same behaviours or not!
