I currently own an LG WH16NS40 that I successfully flashed and it's been working fine, ripped movies like Furiosa and The Matrix without issue.
But it cannot read any of the Lord of the Rings 4k discs, presumably because these are triple-layer. It doesn't even log an error, it just spins the disc for a while and then ejects it.
Is the ASUS BW-16D1HT better about this?
Thanks.
ASUS drives and triple-layer discs
Re: ASUS drives and triple-layer discs
It is my experience that different drives often produce different results with the same disc.
The conventional wisdom of this forum, however, is that the ASUS BW-16D1HT is functionally equivalent to the LG WH16NS40. In fact, the innards of the ASUS drive are manufactured by LG.
Generally speaking, a Pioneer drive is likely to be the most reliable. Unfortunately, current Pioneer firmware specifically disables LibreDrive support, which means the drives can't rip UHDs and the firmware can't be downgraded. There are sellers on this forum that can sell you a new Pioneer drive with older, compatible firmware. If you live in Europe, the Verbatim 43888 has an older (and power hungry) compatible Pioneer drive inside it. It isn't regarded as highly as more modern Pioneer drives, but many like it better than most LG or ASUS drives these days.

Re: ASUS drives and triple-layer discs
It's not so much that they are triple layer discs. It's very well known that the LotR set are terrible discs to rip and practically everyone has had multiple issues ripping them. Do a search and you will find multiple threads about these discs.SunByrne wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 9:23 pmI currently own an LG WH16NS40 that I successfully flashed and it's been working fine, ripped movies like Furiosa and The Matrix without issue.
