Drive sometimes fails ripping uhd discs

Post by jayb3369 »

I can’t remember what kind of drive this is, but it is one that I got based on what I read on this forum years ago. I’ve attached the miv info.

Sometimes when ripping a uhd disc, mkv will error out with some sort of scsi error and the drive will disappear. My macbook can’t see it. mkv can’t detect any optical drives. Note that I’ve never done any upgrades to the dtive, per this website

it takes some combination or rebooting the laptop, powering the drive off and on, and disconnecting the usb before it sees the drive again, I just had this happen, but didn’t think to get a screenshot of the error messages. i was able to get the drive back online so i could post the mkv info, so i started to rip the sting again. if it errors out again, i’ll post the errors.

Any thoughts as to why this happens?

usual steps are

clean the disc
replace the disc
clean the laser
replace drive with a pioneer see below for that

its very normal for those lg/asus drive to need to play the reboot and power cycle game it is very annoying.

how do you clean the laser?
eject tray
unplug drive with tray out
pop off front bezel clips on sides and bottom with plastic tool
undo screws from bottom will be under stickers if you have an s13, 213 does not have stickers.
flip backover and remove top cover
clean lasers with a lint free cloth or qtip and alcohol and dry with another do this 2 times and do not let it air dry you must remove the residue with a dry one!

With cleaning I use a special spray that was used to clean video heads and of course lasers, spray a bit on the qtip and gently swipe over the laser, it will evaporate so you didn't need to worry about drying it off. You only needed to do it once and all would be good again.
