MakeMKV 1.17.7 too old, crashes on start

Post by mike admin » Wed Sep 11, 2024 6:39 pm

The latest available version of MakeMKV is 1.17.7 . When started without a key, the program would show a dialog claiming that it is "too old" and two buttons - "Exit" or "Register". Sometimes, either shortly at start, or after clicking the "Register" button, the program would crash with a dialog box "Fatal error occurred".

Firstly, please do accept our apologies. September happened totally unexpectedly, and we plainly did not update the program in time. Nonetheless the program is fully functional and all newest discs are supported. In order to use the program please choose the "Register" button and enter the current beta key from viewtopic.php?p=3548 . However, the version 1.17.7 has yet another bug - it crashes when scanning the disc with expired key. If you start unregistered version of MakeMKV having a disc in a drive - it would crash, sooner or later, not giving you the chance to enter the registration key. Please make sure there is no disc in drive when starting MakeMKV for a first time in order to enter the key.

The new version will be available shortly.

Once again, apologies.

I tried the key from viewtopic.php?p=3548 but it didn't work (on Windows, on Linux the code worked).

I am seeing this as well.

Is there not a way to download old versions? 1.17.6 worked fine for me.

Old versions still need to have the key added.

Same here. I can't get it to work at all with either the suggested key or my own key.

I have to wonder if anyone is actually inputting the new key in the link provided, with no disk in the drive, as specified in the original message in this thread? Everyone is describing EXACTLY what Mike's message described, without saying whether or not they tried the fix, and having an issue.

Make sure there's no DVD in the drive before pasting the temporary registration key.

1.) Take the DVD out of the Drive.

2.) Restart the app.

3.) Copy the registration key (CTRL+C)

4.) Click the "registration key" button

5.) Paste the registration key into the registration field (CTRL+V)

6.) Click the "OK" button

7.) You're done!

You're welcome!

Actually, there's another step to confirm that it worked...

6a.) Restart MakeMKV to make sure it took the key

My 1.17.7 on Win11 still freezes and then crashes within seconds of starting. Sometimes, the "too old" message comes up. Have tried...

Installing the latest key (when I get the chance before it freezes)
Uninstalling and reinstalling 1.17.7, several times, including reboots in between, and searching through the registry for anything to do with "makemkv".

And yes, there's no disk in the drive.

It was working fine, just a few days ago.
Any chance a Windows update caused this?

Sorted!

After trying all the above, I tried downgrading to 1.17.6 - still crashed.

So, I unmounted a VIRTUAL CD DRIVE that gets created when I plugged in a USB Hub/NIC, by simply unplugging the USB device, and MakeMKV worked again.

Strange thing is, this USB device that mounts a virtual drive for its drivers, has been plugged into my machine for months, and MakeMKV was working fine until the last few days.

Anyway, check for virtual drives in Disk Management and unmount them - it might help you too.

The registration worked fine for me on the first attempt. I found the instructions provided very easy to follow.

Thanks!!!
