Newbie with a drive question

#1 Post by wout_2007 » Mon Aug 26, 2024 9:31 pm

Hello everyone,
I wanna start my own Jellyfin server but I really don't know what drive or drive model to buy and I hope someone on here can recommend me a few drives. I am looking for a Blu ray drive that's 5.25 inch, I live in the Netherlands and I do not have that big of a budget (between 0 to 60 euro's) are there any more budget friendly options for me that are compatible and do not require to much setup and prep work?

Thanks in advance! :D

Check with a seller on this forum in your region. As you can only afford to buy 1 drive, I highly recommend you increase your budget (probably triple it!) and get a Pioneer drive.

I have a Pioneer 212-DBK (cross-flashed for UHD readability) available but the shipping costs might be too much for you. Check my signature.
Cheers :D

Get a Vinpower 212V and post again or buy a Verbatim 43888 external that is UHD capable.

Hi,

My first time posting here in a while. Longtime MakeMKV user, and owner of a WH16NS60 that's just gone bust on me after a few years. Looking for a new drive for my Windows 11 desktop. I've done some homework here and you seem to know your stuff. Hoping you can help me out! Thank you in advance for your time.

I am choosing between the Verbatim 43890 (https://www.amazon.ca/Verbatim-External ... 01FUIYMDC/) and the Vinpower BDR-212V (https://www.amazon.ca/Pioneer-BDR-212V- ... B08R89FN61). It is my understanding both of these drives can be flashed to read UHD discs which, combined with the occasional BD/DVD, is my main use case. Which one is a more reliable drive that will provide me a (hopefully) equivalent experience to the WH16NS60 speed/longevity/reliability-wise?

Appreciate your help! Thank you!

The Vinpower has reinforced gears and pulleys compared to its Pioneer sibling.

The Verbatim is very power hungry and doesn‘t work on all USB ports. The enclosure is not the best quality. The drive inside is.

It‘s your choice. Both are OK but I would go for the Vinpower if you don‘t need portability.

Did the 43890 work? I just picked up the same thing and am hopeful. Any advice and direction would be appreciated.

I have an 43890 drive being shipped. What do I need to do to enable UHD support?

Thank you for any help!
