Verbatim 43888 BDR - UD04 Issue

#1 Post by mm8718 » Fri Aug 16, 2024 1:52 pm

Hi All

I had a Pioneer S12-UHT till recently but i concluded that the drive was dead as it stopped reading a few discs back to back with various erros even when i changed the enclosure.

Amazon kindly accepted the return as it was literally just 2 years old so withing its warranty by a few days.

I bought a Verabtim 43888 as seen below and trying my first disc and i am still getting medium errors. It is a different disc this time. American Sniper (2014) 4k Blu Ray.

These are the errors i am getting:

Code: Select all

MakeMKV v1.17.6 darwin(arm64-release) started

And this is the Drive Information:

I am getting the exact same erros if i use the drive in Windows instead - so looks like might be the disc?

You guys need to wash the discs with warm water and liquid soap. Then try again. Make also sure that the drive gets enough power. The Verbatims are very power hungry!

Perhaps but this a barely used Disc, Brand new out of the box drive.

I have already cleaned the disc as best as i could but i am hoping it is the disc and not the drive. I will have some more discs to play with next week. Maybe the Pioneer was gine after all - its still here with me as not returned it back to Amazon yet.

The drive is attached to a Mac Mini directly so in theory there should be plenty of power!

Now i am getting different errors:

Code: Select all

Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk6' at offset '31506825216'
Error 'Posix error - Input/output error' occurred while reading '/dev/rdisk6' at offset '31506825216'
Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00075.m2ts' at offset '31506825216'
Thanks

A couple of wrong assumptions here. New discs have some invisible film that makes it hard to read them. Therefore wash UHDs!

You should try a powered USB hub that will make sure the drive gets enough power or how do you know that your Mac Mini does deliver enough?

...and regarding the S12. You should have tried to clean the laser lens. I sense some attitude here. So why are you posting and asking for help but you are just arguing against everything you receive as advice.

Tried a few discs already and still no luck. I get my discs over the post so will have some more on Tuesday...will try then.

Admitedly the discs were older films so perhaps they had a bad time. Old James Bond films remastered.

?? There is no attitude. I have been using MakeMKV for years and been on this forum a long time.

Apologies if i caused offense. I have always been grateful for all the help.

Just trying to get to the bottom of this while juggling other things at the moment.

I am trying to work out whether it was the drive, the enclosure or the discs hence the process of elimination.

As for your earlier post, i washed the disc and still the same issue. With regards to power, i tried 2 different PCs and i dont think its a power issue. It copied a DVD disc just now with no issue. Perhaps nothign wrong with the older S12 either. Maybe i will wait for the new batch of discs and try again.

Thanks for your help as always - at some point however it becomes Value proposition. In the last few days i have spend over £160 for a new enclosure and a new drive. I am trying to get to the bottom of this while i can still return the drives. Adding a Powered USB hub is not an option as it just adds to the complexity and cable mess. Thanks for the advice however.

Incidentally....how do you clean the laser lens of the S12?

You buy a CD lens cleaner disc. Yes CD. Because the two lasers are co-positined in the drive and the most robust disc is the CD with large structures compared to DVD, BD and the most sensitive UHD. Just run it a couple of times.

Usually the rear ports of a desktop PC deliver most power.

A nice gadget I use is this USB->SATA adapter which can be used for optical 5,25" drives and also for "flying" old HDDs and SSDs.

Thanks. It was the rear port. The mac mini only has rear ones! Sadly I don't have a desktop pc any more to test it with but I am begining to think it was just a bad batch of blue rays over the post. Will know more on Tuesday I suppose. Will try the S12 again. Thanks for the help.

Ok. So ignore the various blu ray Cleaning discs and get a CD cleaning kit? Something similar to this: https://amzn.eu/d/gJSoIAX
