Hello.

I started ripping Supernatural series, blu-ray format. Everything has been working well except for 1 disk out of more than a dozen. Season 1 Disk 3 is failing with this error:

Code: Select all

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading '/BDMV/STREAM/00036.m2ts' at offset '3942316032'
Failed to save title /BDMV/STREAM/00036.m2ts to file /Volumes/MyBook Duo 6TB/Raw Movies/SUPERNATURAL_s01d03/BDMV/STREAM/00036.m2ts
My drive is external, can't have an internal drive because I'm using an Apple MacBook Pro 16" from 2019.

I checked the disk, I don't see any mark or any discoloration that would explain why it's failing. It's brand new directly from Amazon.

What are my options?

clean the disc with a water and a lint free microfiber cloth and dry with another.
replace the disc
clean the drive lasers
replace the drive

Did you try gently cleaning your disc? The first post on this thread explains that those kind of errors mean the optical drive was unable to correctly read the disc.

Hi All,

Over the past year I have slowly been working my way through my movie library and have had great success with the majority of my DVD media and a fair amount of my blu-ray collection with little to no problems that I couldn't overcome. That being said I have a few blu-rays that are a thorn in my side. All of Harry Potter 1-6 no problem then 7-8 Error. I went through the disk cleaning process, Updated my drives firmware read through the forum and finally just came to the conclusion that my dive must be bust so I sent it off under warranty and received a new drive only for the problem to percist. This seems to happen to me with 1 out of every 4 blu-ray movies I own. I'd really prefer not to have to buy another drive in hopes that may solve my problems so I'm reaching out for suggestions.

Here's the log of my latest headache:

I am having issues getting all the episodes off disks. I have an external disk drive and it is not the same episodes that won't rip each time. The episodes play just fine, I just can't rip them all.

New one on me for MakeMKV.

Brand New boxed set of Agents of SHIELD.

Get this on one or two of the disks. Any thoughts?

had this on perfect 4K discs of Citizen Kane, Star Wars Episode 2 and 3. Brand new untouched discs. Cleaned, tried multiple times. Same offset every time. So frustrating.

MakeMKV, unlike most everything else, uses the built-in hash data on a blu-ray to verify that what it has read off the disc is correct. It only produces output when it has verified that all the data it has read is correct.

A stand alone blu-ray player generally doesn't check. It blows past errors, hoping they're small enough that you don't notice or quickly forget. Using other software on your computer to copy a disc probably didn't check either. So, if the drive read incorrect data, for whatever reason, when you were making an ISO, MakeMKV will detect that error when reading from the ISO.

This feature of MakeMKV is one of its greatest strengths. It is also occasionally maddening. :)
New here, and slogged through this thread. So far, this is the most helpful explanation, genuine thank you!

IMO it's only a "strength" for use cases where folks want a bit-perfect copy for archival or similar situations. For those of us who are ripping our blu rays for convenience -- e.g. using Plex vs having to juggle discs -- this strict verification is overkill, and counterproductive. As a registered user, I wish this software allowed me to decide how much "blows past errors" I'm willing to accept in my ripped version instead of assuming I can't tolerate a few dropped frames (or even a few janky seconds here and there).
I agree - this should be OPTIONAL. DVDs often have DELIBERATE Bad Blocks to prevent copying and dollars to donuts if it can be done in Blu-ray, they will. Apps like 'Fairmount' on the Mac were superior because they would copy whatever was readable and this never prevented a movie from being saved.

Thanks for this!

I had a disk in my 9-1-1 blu ray bootlegs that was resistant, but swapping drives several times and upping the number of retries got me everything copied.

Hi everyone, hope youre all doing good

I have rip errors, but I am not sure if I belong here

My rip errors were somehwere along the lines of ""This Blu-ray Disc needs a library for AACS decoding, and your system does not have it."

I am trying to rip the film Cache (2005), and I do own it, but when I rip it with MKV, I get one folder and four other folders inside which are AACS, BDMV, CERTIFICATE, and a file called discatt.dtt

The rip errors I get are with VLC player

Thanks for any and all help

Did you ever resolve this ? I am seeing the same problem with Agents of SHIELD on two discs so far. Tried different drives cleaning discs etc yet the problem remains. The discs play fine in the drive to watch all the episodes so something else is going on that i havent figured out as yet.

When backing up to a folder you must check the box to decrypt the files.
Cheers :D

Hey all, just thought I would post a recent experience I've had to add to the conversation here.

First of all, I had to redo my Plex server who trashed it's config a couple weeks back due to some things I was testing, and the result didn't work as it usually does. Anyway because of this, I decided to wipe my Plex drive and start over with a different filesystem. Anyway I initially had an LG BP50NB40 that I had flashed several years ago to the last firmware which was 1.0.3 Anyway I had always been able to use this drive without issue connected to my iMac directly using the main connector of the Y plug as the iMac has USB 3.0, and the drive even worked for a short time on my Anker 60W powered USB 3 hub. Suddenly while re-ripping discs, the LG started flipping out, going into seek loops and having to be power cycled to stop. Along with this I started getting read errors and failures for discs that had previously worked fine on the same drive, the first time around of ripping.

It got to the point where the drive wouldn't even come online where the mac would recognize it, but it had power to spin up a disc, and sometimes it would come online and then disconnect a few minutes later. So, if it was a power issue, it's most likely due to something in the drive failing as it was several years old, and it now has the same behavior regardless of port, or computer, or cable used.

Anyway I bought I pioneer drive off Amazon to replace it: https://www.amazon.com/PIONEER-External ... 0C367V1QW/ and it works perfectly and it's extremely fast. It also has it's own power supply, and works over USB 3.0 speeds. Question, I still have one disc that WON"T rip regardless of what I do, even cleaned it, it's the older disc of Stargate Extended cut with ACSv3 and it's also a gold disc, and I know some players have issues with Gold discs, the particular issues with this one are like described in the other thread regarding this title, it hangs at analyzing seamless segments, and in backup mode, it copies all but the movie, and fails with hash error. Since it's a 20+ year old disc now, I was wondering if the newer release of the movie is more reliable to rip. I could get another LG drive as a backup as the disc works in that model drive, but I'd rather stick to one drive if I can, since just about all my discs have worked in the pioneer. I rarely have issues with MakeMKV, or ripping, so that's why you don't hear from me much. I just thought I would share this experience, provide a link to the drive I got, and ask about the disc releases, to see what people thought.

I'm running MakeMKV v1.17.7 on a late 2015, 27" 5K iMac, with Monterey 12.7.5. I also had issues with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but after giving the disc a good clean, and then doing a backup, I was able to re-rip from backup. That also was a strange disc, I bought it May 9th of this year, and it ripped first time out of the box with the LG drive. The second time around, it failed on both drives with the typical medium read error messages, but then the LG drive died. So, at least I was able to get a new rip with the new drive.

Anyway, thanks for the good info here, and hope this post can help someone else. Have a great day!
