Marty or anyone else please help...MakeMKV not working with LG WH16NS40?

Post by isamu »

I'm trying to get VLC to play my UHD Bluray. In this case it's The Big Boss with Bruce Lee. MKV appears to recognize the disc fine because delivers all the information about in the "Info" section. But upon trying to play the movie in VLC, VLC just hangs, with the little vertical bar sliding back and forth.

My drive is an LG WH16NS40, currently flashed with fw WH16NS40 1.02. Based on recommendations from this forum, I tried flashing it with fw LG WH16NS60 1.02 and the results were the same. Can you tell which is the current correct fw for this drive specifically to work with MKV and VLC to only watch movies?

Oh and one more thing...is AnyDVD HD required to work with decrypting and watching UHD movies with the MKV/VLC combo? Or is it simply not needed?

Is makemkv integration enabled?
Does makemkv open or rip a disc on its own?

In VLC be sure to use this procedure
Select Open disc
Select Blu-ray select the drive or make sure it right
Then play

Thanks for your reply Billy. OK so first of all...

1)Is makemkv integration enabled?

YES

2)Does makemkv open or rip a disc on its own?

No. Upon selecting the File>Backup>Select output directory option, I get a failed to backup error.

3)In VLC be sure to use this procedure
Select Open disc
Select Blu-ray select the drive or make sure it right

Yup tried that and VLC gives me an error saying Bluray disc is corrupted.
______________________________________________

Was able to watch the movie(for the most part) using Leawo Bluray player using the default WH16NS40 firmware, but that player sucks and was giving me intermittent black screen and freeezing problems.

I've tried all the different kinds of firmware 1.02MK, 1.00, 1.03 and MKV doesn't want to play nice with this disc. For what it's worth, it's a Layer 3 UHD disc. I've heard these LG drives suck at reading layer 3 discs so maybe that's the culprit?

Please let me know what else I should try this is driving me up the wall! I'll try Firmware DE_LG_WH16NS60-1.02MK.bin again and see if that works but I'm not holding my breath :(

The firmware is not the issue. I dunno why people seem to keep changing the firmware cause they think that's the issue. IT IS NOT!!

You need to sort out the issue why MakeMKV cannot decrypt a disc. If it can't decrypt the disc, it cannot be used as the on-the-fly decrypter to play UHD with VLC.

First of all, is your drive a newer one with SVC NS50 or is it an older NS40 from prior to 2016?

Have you ever been able to rip a UHD disc using this drive and MakeMKV?
Cheers :D

That doesn't help us now. We need to know what it was prior to you flashing it. Try looking at the label sticker on top of the drive.

Hello Marty and thanks for the reply. It is this one...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7 ... =UTF8&th=1

I looked at the disc drive itself before installing it and noticed it says manufactured in 2023, but on the website it says "Date first available July 28, 2013". So not sure what to go on here?

I have only had it for about 3 months and have never tried ripping anything with it before. How would I find out if it's the newer one with SVC NS50 or is it an older NS40 from prior to 2016?

I did a back dump of the original firmware and it is:

HL-DT-ST_BD-RE__WH16NS40_1.05_212005061440_KLKNCPB5824

Let me know if you can find out with this info....otherwise I guess I have no choice but to see if I can pull the drive out if this doesn't help? Let me know.

Backing up disc into folder "E:/UHD BD Rips with MKV/THE BIG BOSS UHD"
Downloading latest HK to C:\Users\Administrator/.MakeMKV ...
Automatic HK downloading is disabled or failed.

this is your issue
your isp or firewall is blocking key downloads
change your dns
check your firewall for geo blocking russia
use a VPN and many different end points until it works

The drive appears to be a new one as you say, so don't worry about that. Yes, Billy is correct. As per your log, the HK downloads are failing. You need to resolve this issue before being able to rip/play UHD discs.

Billy can you please tell me how to go about:

Changing my DNS
Checking my firewall for Geo blocking Russia?

I already have a VPN although it wasn't turned on.

Thanks in advance.

OMG I'LL BE DARN IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't have to change my DNS or mess with my firewall, all I had to do was enable my VPN!! I set it to Germany and voila it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I admittedly haven't tried to rip the disc yet, only play it, but so far it's playing just fine! Thank you SO FUCKING MUCH @Marty and @Billycar for the suggestions and the help in resolving this issue.

Just a quick question for confirmation @ Marty.... firmware DE_LG_WH16NS60-1.02MK.bin *IS* the one I currently have installed. Is this the one you suggest for this particular drive for only playing movies via VLC?

Hmmm....OK seems the video does play for a little bit but then suddenly freezes after about 2 minutes in, while the audio continues to play. Any ideas what I can do to remedy this, or is VLC just a shitty player for UHDs?

Yes, that is the recommended firmware for your drive.

It is recommended not to play UHD discs. It's far better to rip them first then play the rip.
