Suzume (2022) Bonus Disc Debug Code

Post by TheL1GHTSiDE »

The feature film disc ripped fine but the bonus disc produced a debug code. I thought I would be helpful and post the log file.

The important thing is the part at the bottom:
005036:0104 Copy complete. 13 titles saved.
If there had actually been a failure, it would be reported here.

Not necessarily true.I've had discs that gave me debug codes that ultimately successfully ripped with no error message, but were broken/corrupted during playback.

Were they DVDs or a blu-ray? As I understand it, MakeMKV uses the content hash table that's part of the blu-ray specification to verify that what it reads from the blu-ray is a correct copy of what's on the disc. The output MakeMKV produces from a blu-ray (or UHD) should be 'correct' copy of what's on the disc. The file could, of course, become corrupted afterwards as part of a botched file copy or a hard drive with a bad sector and there's nothing MakeMKV can do about that.
DVDs don't have a content hash table that MakeMKV can use to verify that what is read from the disc is correct. I don't know exactly what MakeMKV does to verify DVDs, but I think it is more of a best effort sort of thing.

Blu-rays. I've ripped over 300 discs and some of them have had scratches or spots where MakeMKV has to retry reading the section, ultimately failing to do so but it continues ripping anyway. The result is a file with corrupted video/audio, sometimes you can't even tell until you watch through it. I know for a fact it's not due to a faulty drive/bad sectors as the same disc will give me the same errors upon multiple rips to multiple drives...

I learned later that it may be due to my LG drive. LG has a "feature" that allows seamless playback of discs with scratches by sending dummy data (from what I understand) instead of reporting an error. Probably a nice feature for Blu-ray playback but sucks for ripping. I've found more success making a full disc backup, as hash check errors seem to be reported correctly when I do that.
