MakeMKVcon fails to read discs

Post by epsilon0 »

Trying to rip Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator: Salvation using makemkvcon (1.17.7) on a Gentoo linux machine, using an LG BP60NB10 drive with LibreDrive.

When using info, mkv, and backup commands the program fails to detect the AACS directory on the discs (AACS directory not present, assuming unencrypted disc) and during backup I see Content hash table missing, unable to verify integrity of M2TS files warnings.

Discs are part of a six disc box set. I have purchased a second set, initially suspecting a bad disc, but get the same behavior. I've seen other posts suggesting these errors indicate the discs are counterfit, but I'm hesitant to jump to that conclusion seeing as how the other discs in each set are fine. Funny thing is using HandBrakeCLI reads both of these discs just fine. Backing up the discs to file appears to work and I can play the m2ts streams from the backup.

Anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on? I'm leaning towards an internal makemkv error.

Those messages aren't really errors per se. You were able to make a backup of the full disc, right?

Most movies usually come encrypted with AACS, so being able to view the discs plainly with Handbrake does suggest (to me at least) that it's an unusual disc, if not counterfeit. How big was the backup? Was it something in the 40 watt range :D ~40 gigabyte range? If the total size is closer to 25gb, that'd also count as unusual.

Thanks. These are definitely unusual. The directory sizes are listed below:

Code: Select all

Terminator_3:_Rise_of_the_Machines_(2003)
22K ./MAKEMKV
15K ./CERTIFICATE
23G ./BDMV

Terminator_Salvation_(2009)
90K ./CERTIFICATE
22G ./BDMV
122K ./MAKEMKV
These all appear to be burned discs (BD-R), based on their data layer appearance. Going to look into it further to see if this is a bad manufacturing run or bad counterfeits.

Those characteristics are screaming "counterfeit discs" in my mind.
  • No AACS encryption?
  • Less than 25GB (single-layer disc) for a whole movie?
  • Bluish/purple colored underside?
None of those are manufacturing failures.

Any updates on this?

I've got what I suspect is the same 6 Disc Set "Terminator 6 - Film Collection", "T 1-6" on the cover.

T3 and Salvation both refuse to open.

All the discs throw the AACS error, but unlike T3 and Salvation, the others all decode just fine.

Disc Information
Label: TERMINATOR_3
Timestamp: 2023-12-14 03:05:53
Data capacity: 22.55 Gb
Disc type: BD-R
Number of layers: 1
Channel bit length: 74,5 nm (25.0 GB max. per layer)

Comparing to a collection of movies I bought off the shelf at a Brick and Mortar, I do suspect maybe the whole set is counterfeit, as instead of BD-R, the off the shelf set IDs as BD-ROM

Disc Information
Label: BTTF_UPB75
Timestamp: 2020-08-14 15:14:09
Protection: AACS v68
Data capacity: 38.37 Gb
Disc type: BD-ROM
Number of layers: 2
Channel bit length: 74,5 nm (25.0 GB max. per layer)

That sounds like a counterfeit. Finding a BD-R disc in a boxset is not normal.

The listing on blu-ray.com says all 6 discs in the collection are dual-layer BD-50 discs.

Just checked all the discs, they ALL report as BD-R.

Sad days, guess it's going back and I'll track down either another source, or just build my own from singles.

I appreciate the insight.
