Switch! Reloaded Vol. 3 DVD 1 / 2

#1 Post by LigH_de » Wed Apr 17, 2024 5:15 am

Hi there.

"Switch!" is a German comedy project resembling a TV consumer zapping through different channels, watching parodies of famous series, shows, magazines, news, etc. Following the first classic series, a second series named "Switch! reloaded" followed.

Most of the discs in the complete box (Vol. 1-5) are unprotected, except for DVD 1 and 2 in Vol. 3 which use CSS protection and an additional structure protection; makeMKV is unable to analyze the structure, reports a mismatch between IFO data and BUP positions for VTS 2-7, and eventually displays only VTS 1 as available for processing.

In contrast, DVD Decrypter is able to rip PGC 2 of each VTS 2-7 in IFO mode to PGC-VOBs. But it also fails reading the whole disc in ISO mode, reports read errors, fails to patch IFO files on-the-fly.

I guess it uses a logical copy protection which attempts to outsmart the smarter rippers which analyse the whole structure, while a DVD Video player would skip the malicious parts, and a rather "dumb" ripping mode does so as well.

Attaching a debug log. Please advise further steps.

Debug log did not attach, because of limitations in the software here. Try putting the log between [ code ][ /code ] tags (without the spaces) in your message, if it's less than 64K in size.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem :(
Could you solve it, LigH_de?

Partially. DVD Decrypter could extract manually selected PGC-VOBs. For makeMKV to become able to handle it, I hope my logs can help the developers to improve a heuristic to detect misleading information in IFO files corrupted by the authoring studio to confuse it. So I can only wait for their feedback.

I do not know why MakeMKV is not working, but I do know that the reason your log is about 15MB is because the same DEBUG line is repeated about half a million times.

In any case, MakeMKV has different DVD Opening Modes that you could try. Also, some users have reported success with troublesome DVDs by using an older version of MakeMKV, 1.16.7.

OK, I will try the different modes; mike admin missed updating the beta key so I hope the test version will handle that until a purchase is being processed.

PS: Method "CellTrim" worked for these DVDs, thank you! :D

I tried to make a iso-Backup with the CellTrim mode but it's still not working.
The iso was created and I could start episode 1, from the 6 episodes, but when I try to start the other episodes VLC don't start the episode.
With the original DVD VLC works.

An ISO backup with makeMKV? Must have missed that feature.

I tried to make one with DVD Decrypter which didn't work well due to the delay caused by data errors. I might try it by making it ignore all read errors. Anyway, makeMKV was able to extract all titles as chaptered MKVs, that's sufficient for my needs.

Recent versions of MakeMKV added 'backup' functionality for DVDs. It makes a .iso file. Backups for blu-rays and UHDs still make a folder, not a .iso file.

You can go over "Datei -> Backup.." choose the destination folder and go.
Tried with Version v1.17.6

Anyway, I could make it as you say, thank you so far.
The CellTrim mode was just a little hope :D
