Best 3 layer drive

Post by elgoose »

I’ve had a Asus BW-16D1HT for years and it’s definitely spent a good amount of time messing me around having to retry several times when trying to create backups.

Recently got the Jurassic World ultimate collection 6 movie set and cannot get it to backup the 3 layer fallen kingdom or dominion disks with failing on several m2ts files on each, tried dusting the disks, running them under water and using pure isopropyl alcohol that I use for cleaning my 3D printer.

Considering a BU40N or a Verbatim 43888, but wanted to check here before getting a new drive for the “difficult disks”? I’d like something that is better at reading 3 layer and bad quality disks.

If the 43888 is worth it, I’ve seen on here there are people selling them with confirmed working firmware, but if I bought one new from a U.K. distributor is this a drive that can come with firmware that no longer works? I’d like to shop where I can get a drive replaced if I have any issues during the warranty period.

I'm pretty sure the 43888 will still work out of the box with MakeMKV. There are better Pioneer drives however (https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=147839#p147839). Unfortunately, a recent Pioneer firmware update specifically prevents it from working with MakeMKV for 4K UHDs.

The sellers on this forum do have some modern Pioneer drives with the older firmware to sell. In the UK, that would be Asmcom. Here's their thread on this forum: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19387

They would be your best bet for getting a high quality drive.
