Matrix from 1999 won't copy

Post by Wally » Thu Feb 22, 2024 7:08 pm

I have been trying to copy the Matrix from 1999 and I get the following error.

MakeMKV v1.17.6 win(x64-release) started
Using direct disc access mode
Title #2 has length of 12 seconds which is less than minimum title length of 120 seconds and was therefore skipped
Failed to open disc

The Disk plays normally and has no scratches.

Well, "Auto" didn't cut it. Try one of these (CellTrim?):

DVD opening modes - CellWalk, CellTrim, CellFull

I am having the same issue as the original post. I tried opening the dvd manually and saving title 1 (which VLC tells me is the correct title). The file saves successfully, BUT the first 2.5-3 mins are cut off (the opening credits and Trinity's initial skirmish with the agents). I have not been able to find anything in the forums that would correct the issue of MakeMKV cutting off these minutes of a show. Thoughts?

Had same kind of problem here with getting it ripped from my disc, and when I finally did get it ripped, it started several minutes into the movie.

Eventually I found that using "CellFull" worked to expose more. Once that brought up the list of media to rip, check carefully for a slightly bigger file among the mess of junk that shows up in the list. I found a slightly bigger file that was the correct one to rip and that worked.

I had two copies of Matrix 1 actually and both exhibit these symptoms (bought at different times so I doubt they are the same "run" of the movie).

There is something going on with this movie and others like the move "300" (also from WB...). I have same issue with 300 but haven't worked out how to solve that one yet. Maybe it's a WB DVD thing?

Same issue. I have the "4-film Collection" produced in 2003 and while I can rip "Matrix Reloaded" and "Matrix Revolutions", it fails to auto rip "The Matrix". Using CellFull, I had the same experience as @postal_24 and can play "The Matrix" without error using VLC (which is using libmmbd).

I ran into something similar (a few years back) when I ripped the P90X discs and had to do that manually. So, I tried opening it in manual mode (still with CellFull) and this time I found that track 4 was the full movie and was able to rip it successfully. Note that I didn't do anything like one has to usually do when doing manual mode (e.g., pasting in the codes) so, maybe I just didn't see this one last time. Not sure. All I know is the second time it ripped successfully.

Thank you for posting this. I never would've figured out how to copy this. "CellFull" worked to give me a complete version and one with the opening missing until Trinity call Morpheus. I discovered the complete version contained 99 Chapters. The incomplete one was 37 chapters. Google tells me versions vary between 38 and 39 chapters depending on the disc one has. So, I took this a step further. I discovered the first six chapters of the complete version contained the missing video from the 37 chapter version. I used MKVToolNix Multiplexer to split the complete version at the end timestamp for chapter six. Using this new file that contains the part missing from the 37 chapter version, I used Chapter Editor to change the end timestamp for Chapter 01 to the timestamp at the end of Chapter 06. I renamed this new Chapter 01 to Chapter 00 and removed the last five chapters and saved that file. I took this file and added it to Multiplexer then appended the 37 Chapter version to it. Finally, I renamed the now 38 Chapters in the formerly incomplete version of the video from Chapter 00 to Chapter 37 to Chapter 01 to Chapter 38. Now I have a complete version without any funkingness of 99 chapters and chapters numbered conventionally from 01 to 38. I'm not sure all of that is necessary, but it was a good exercise in learning what one can do with MKVToolNix.
